go find work as a cook in a breakfast cafe or something small, use the experience there to move up to a proper kitchen who are looking for cooks and kitchen hands. develop a decent grasp on how the kitchen runs and be a reliable worker and begin your apprenticeship training so you can be a real chef.

Do not go to culinary school. Chefs hate culinary students. They're entitled and the worst workers in the kitchen cuz they think they're more educated or creative and have some artistic chef pipe dream that fucks up the kitchen. You'll start low man like everyone else, have your culinary student reputation working against you, and will be in debt from school. If you want to become a chef go find the hardest most intense kitchen you can find, either extremely high volume like a resort restaurant or super high end like Michelin star. My rule of thumb was i always sought kitchens that felt like the tv shows/movies with yelling chefs and super competitive cooks. Because if you can emerge as the top dog in those environments then youll be able to get work at any place. Offer to work your way up. You'll start on prep, fight your way onto the line, then dominate the line. Once you've done that people will take you seriously. If you're a better line cook than everyone else (just be fast, clean, and sober) then you have a shot at sous chef, do that for a few years and then use your experience in a restaurant with a big name to swing a head chef position at something more small time. Then you can do your own menu and run your own kitchen, if you make that place profitable you can swing that into getting investors for your own spot. It's a long road but kitchen people are easy to dominate if you have any intelligence and don't have a drug/alcohol problem.
