I need help understanding instruments that track commodity prices, for example "UNG". From what I understand it tracks contracts on the price of natural gas.

People say dont invest in this for long term, only short term trades that its a "widow maker". Why? If natural gas prices are low and UNG is at an ATL wouldnt it make sense to throw some money at it until prices spike even if that takes years?

As far as I know UNG would make that kind of sense because it's not leveraged so shouldn't have the decay issues inherent to the instrument (or is it vehicle) itself over longer holds, but perhaps there are other issues that I am clueless to. It *is* still subject to contango, though, so you might still be waiting on a bottom. Of course, when it eventually rises above present price then whatever lows you held through would be worth it I'm sure. As far as I know it's a good way to go, I might even go ahead myself, in fact, while awaiting where I want to jump into BOIL at (which might wind up being Sept).

This is BOIL/KOLD or any other LEVERAGED one. No one gives those specific warnings to UNG. The only 2 warnings I have seen for UNG are that the bottom for gas wasn't in, and that it's still subject to contango, that's it, as far as I can recall. All the rest is about BOIL.

Natural gas itself, as a commodity, is a widowmaker. It's unpredictable and schizophrenic.
Commodity etfs track futures prices and use forward contracts to try to match the cash flows of that commodity. They are often rebalanced (daily?), even with 1x leverage. They often have high transaction costs and IMFs.
They are designed for short term plays and hedging. They often have to reverse split over a long time because the fund loses money. They're designed to farm money from dumb retail traders that are too stupid to realize what is happening, or too poor to trade actual futures/CFDs.
