That'd be a pretty stupid thing to do when the wagie could take your $500 gold coin, put $100 out of their wallet in the register to pay for your groceries, and then net $400.

You do bring up the only downside to physical gold as a currency, though, which is the relative lack of divisibility. When society loses faith in those fiat bills, though, precious metals have always been the fallback.

skin effect, and you're going to have gunk on the contacts.
Just use a magnet, all these guys use tungsten for it, because it's really close atomic weight, so if you're using the most shit scale on the planet it doesn't come up when you check the density.

fake gold like this is mostly fud and really really easy to catch there's a pile of ways to test it.

But it's not even a strawman it's a hayfield. If cash is still usable PM holders would have cash on hand or the means to acquire by selling. If cash isn't usable you wouldn't trade thousands of dollars for a coffee, I'd give a silver dime or nickel which, if economy was at a point where cash is failing, would likely be recognized as a decent medium of exchange and due to small size unlikely to be faked.

Even 150 years ago, they minted coins of around 1/10th of an ounce and had them in circulation.
That´s just $200.

They went down to 1 gram, less than 1/30th of an ounce for silver and bronze rounds.

I bet you could get down to half a gram with current minting tech.

In order to beat the issues of bimetallism I would suggest to not use silver coins and gold coins but to use coinage with the same gold/silver alloy.
Say 85% silver, 5% gold and 10% copper or smth.

So half a gram of an alloy of that composition would contain 0.013664 oz silver and 0.00080377 oz gold for a market value of $1.95

You´d need two of them for a coffee.
