If you're sorting the catalog by "Bump order" or "Last reply" then you're exposing yourself to mostly threads with lots of posts in them already. So if you're doing that then you're increasing the chances of the threads you enter dying after you post in them. With the Catalog set to sort by "Creation date" you do the opposite, you see newer threads and hence mostly threads with few posts in them. You should always sort the Catalog by "Creation date" unless you're in some special situation where you want to see the latest post or latest bumped thread (for example like wanting to find a recent get very quickly without having to post the post number).
