So in the US, you can never go bankrupt to remove student loan debt, and the interest on repayments is like - 7%
If you are unwilling or unable to pay, they garnish wages or take your shit. Plus there's the importance of a credit score. Is there a way to get a lower interest unsecured debt?

The student debt bankruptcy exception became law in 1976. That means no Gen X and almost all Boomers did NOT do what you are implying the entire generations did.
Also, a bankruptcy on your record would actually ruin your credit back then. So, you get no mortgage and no credit cards. There were fewer creditor options and they were stricter.
