what they mean when they say emotional intelligence is simply empathy- which of course is valuable and has its place, but it is not intelligence. It might be intelligent to show empathy, but that is the nearest point between the two concepts

my experience is that You profit from it by knowing yourself better so you fast identify your emotions and the physical state it induce to you, the response you will choose to give to that in the moment you realize, it's s kind of training about being mindfull of what is happening while you interract with others. It's a bit of intellect concepts to just feel and put words about what's there in these moments. In the end I think it can be a good tool to allow you to be a better one for yourself and for the others, because it would let you be more mindful and present, available to give the right answer to others interactions. It can also help to be assertive or manipulative I think. I hope it's somehow understanble or helpful (not a native English speaker). I think a part of it is to adjust yourself to others and be able to do it fast in the moment, but also while respecting yourself and your values.

Emotional intelligence is basically just self awareness when you boil it down, but there's obviously different layers to it. You would be surprised how much of the general population doesn't have an original thought about what it means to be mindful of themselves and their behavior towards others. Then you have those particularly gifted with emotional intelligence that can see past people's exterior expressions almost like intuitive clairvoyance which makes them very skilled at reading people without much effort.
