Europe has no easy access to natural resources like it had with the eras of iron and coal. Even much of the post-war prosperity was based around the end of colonial exploits - Malayan tin made up a substantial part of the UK's budget in the 1950s.

I think it's fine for now, Europe dominates the high-end production which China can't replicate, but a future commodities boom would be devastating for upstream economies.

This is what gets me about it. I remember the world cup vuvuzelas being sold in South Africa for about a dollar but manufactured in China for 25c despite the environmental impacts of manufacture.

The system we live in at the moment doesn't really benefit anyone. The CCP tries to use a resource monopoly to wield power abroad and at home people just get fucked but it. It's started to change in recent years - the ban on things like plastic straws exactly coincided with China banning plastic waste imports - but in rare Earths people actually believe China sits on some magic supply.

Our industry isn't half bad either, and I hope we make it through these dire times and succeed in re-expanding it. The IRA was bad news but the EU adopted a foreign subsidies protective measure. With more and more third world countries exiting the dollar this is good news for us. It removes any incentive to move to the US over here.
We have comparable human capital with a slight productivitiy advantage in Europe + lower wages in eastern Europe.
I think we have everything to become the new world pacifier but are held back by the US because Germany and Italy weren't allowed to have an army and are pretty much tied to the US by now.
France has a decent army but they can't cover ALL Europe. There were plans for a european army so we know the political will to decouple from the US is there, but the war in Ukraine happened to soon and locked us in for a few more decades.
