101.87 -> 12.34 is an 88% profit on the short.
To gain 40k profit off this, you'd need a $45.5k starting position size.
At 3.5% of portfolio net value initial position, this means the portfolio starting size would've been approximately $1,300,000.

Even in downtown San Jose, that's enough to buy a house outright. So no, there's no world where DWAC paid for your 40k backyard renovation on a new house that you just recently accumulated the downpayment for.

It's hard to believe that people are still deluding themselves about the great SPR release scheme.

Trump pushed to fill the SPR with oil at $30-40. Congress blocked it.
Had we done that, prices would've stabilized quickly, producers wouldn't have had to shut in and/or declare bankruptcy, and there never would've even been a spike to $100+ last year.

Meanwhile, they congratulate the Biden admin for dumping half our reserves at $80-90 to "solve" the problem that they themselves created.
Inflation adjusted, the price they got was a huge loss relative to when those reserves were originally filled.
An alternative perspective is looking at it as a short with the view that they can someday refill. This remains to be seen, but clearly they failed to refill even the 3m barrels they had planned back in January. At this point, the "plan" is to wait until 2024 and reevaluate. It's obvious that there is no actual plan. Almost certainly, any attempt to refill would immediately lead to the price pumping back to $90+ because the supply/demand right now cannot support that. Perhaps 4-5 years from now it may be possible.

What truly blows my mind is that people exist who somehow think that Granholm is a competent DoE head. She doesn't even know basic facts like our own domestic oil/gas supply and demand levels:
