Everyone knows you have 100 shares total, and everyone knows that majority of the shares are in Sneed & Cede. People are normally interested in how many are in Computershare since thats the deviant, so thats what you choose report, since you assume people who can read these reports can do basic math.
You've done this for a couple quarters and now its time to do it again, and every time you’ve done it you’ve used the following language (legal consistency is important!):

You ask Computershare how many they have, and they say they have 30 of your shares. Cool.
You are required to ask the other guy how much they have. You assume they are going to say 70, but they instead say they have 75 of your shares. You know that Sneed and Cede are a bunch of shady fucks though, so something is definitely up.

This is a problem, because you can do basic math, and this is a pretty big discrepancy. If you publish these numbers, you might get in legal trouble for starting a riot. You tell the government man who is demanding you deliver your report this problem and they go: “Fucker, im dealing with a collapsing economy right now, make it work.” Or maybe they tell you “Use the one that most people understand” which is Sneed and Cede.

So you update your language, it takes a while to write a updated report, but you do it using very precise language to not invoke the wrath of lawyers:
>“Sneed and Cede, says they have 75 shares, leaving 25 registered to other parties” You are not lying, you are telling the complete truth, just not the complete picture.

I have a theory:
The switch to book somehow fucked up CS’s records. GameStop wanted to include the DRS numbers on the report because they know we want that shit, but CS was only able to provide them with incomplete data, hence the delay and the approximation which was probably provided by sneed & co. GameStop didn’t want to file an extension because it may make the company look bad and they have to provide a legitimate reason for the delay to the SEC, which is why they released it yesterday with the incomplete data.

Gamestop in this case is not the authority, but the messenger, as has been the case for every report prior. If they had reported the count from Computershare, I would be more inclined to accept it as fact. Regardless of what the number is, that the number itself is not sourced from Computershare is a major discontinuity, and therefore we can say that at least some speculation surrounding it is likely closer to the truth than what we see as reported in the 10K.
