They can leverage each borrowed share into several open positions and all they have to do is flash a borrowed share to resolve the FTD, then they shortsell again to deliver the borrow back to the person who lent it to them. They have no direct exposure to borrowed share availability, it's delayed quite a bit and gives them more flexibility.
