Fuck it, I'm shilling it, since I talked to some anons about building it anyway and might as well drop it before market opens. cobwebscripts.com just go to Programs > Yahoo Finance Downloader. I made it open source, so you can check out the script yourself. If you have python, you can run it on your interpreter. If you don't, I tried to make a clunky executable. Just follow the instructions on the site for the exe. A heads up, I recommend using the All rather than the Manual Entry, it's easy to filter stuff out on Excel anyway. It needs the exact ticker as it is on Yahoo Finance. So if it is the SP500, you need ^GSPC, so you need the caret (^) symbol as well. The script is super fragile and basic, has no robustness/special features at the moment, so wrong inputs might cause it to crash/fail. Let me know of any issues/if you want something in there.

No worries. Yahoo Finance is the main source of data that people can easily pull from. But half the links on their own site, even when you log in, are busted. Yet their backend is accessible. Fugg that sounds useful. I should really relearn programming and especially Python since I specifically remember C (and its derivatives) being cancer and Java being too difficult. It's like every day recently we get a new signal telling us the crash is imminent yet you keep doubting. The market is being held up by matchsticks.

The discount window opening up the other day was the biggest signal for me, also the bearish steepening in the yield curve. The yield curve inversion itself should have told you things were going to get bad for the market at some point. All this talk about fighting the Fed is going to look very, very stupid soon.

I said this about a hundred times in /smg/ to the nat gas fags, don't mess with NG at this time of year. There's a reason they call the march-april natural gas arbitrage the widowmaker. Nat gas is always very data dependent so for retail it's hard to trade in the first place, but this time of year is especially so with a dash of added volatility.

That said, in theory it should start going up, but who the fuck knows with the currently still great storage situation. I also have no idea what the production situation looks like, how much is about to come online, what the export capabilities are exactly, what project got approval and I also have no access to long and medium term weather projections. If you also don't know these, stay away for the time being.

The biggest issue is those who control the market try everything in their power to prevent it from crashing even when it should. Idk the purpose of this as it eventually crashes. My hypothesis is, that crashes are far more obvious then they claim they are. By purposefully obfuscating a crash by delaying it they can keep on larping that no one saw it coming even when the signs stated crash for months if not years. This also goes in line with not letting commoners getting rich. Imagine the market actually reacted the way it should. So many people would get rich from betting correctly. Now a lot of these people who can control the market don't want that. Easiest way to avoid losong is by simply not participating, they may try to delay it but it eventually has occured everytime eg 2008 kek talk about a delay, only when they couldnt keep pushing it away did it finally all come tumbling down. Very annoying as this makes it hard to make a bet when the data may be irrelevant to the whims of what they want.

One thing I could use some help on is if anyone has any better estimates/models for CPI data. My back of the envelope math gives me pic related, but I doubt inflation is gonna continue on this path. If I can plug in some better data, I can get a more accurate idea of what potential "fair value" is for the rest of the year. It's just good habit to have in my opinion. I understand you did it quickly for your own use and decided to share it which is cool. I use python for scripting as well and things like setting up "main" is basically my habit by now. For a simple script like that it might not matter if you are not planning to extend it.

>Are you suggesting to change functionality where you'd run the script directly through the command line with the params in there?
yeah exactly. This way if you want to download multiple tickers you can just up arrow in cmd line and replace the ticker with another one. Argparse also supports varargs:
parser.add_argument('tickers', type=str, nargs='+')
This way you could pass multiple tickers at once and then iterate over them in main to fetch all data

But it's a suggestion really, whatever works better for you should be a priority. Just wanted to share some knowledge

How do other countries "use" the US dollar? Does it mean that other countries use the US dollar to conduct international trade and financial transactions? Like how do they just have dollars? I don't get it, why would they just not convert their currency to dollars immediately.

americans made a deal with the saudis that america guarantees their security in the middle east in exchange for saudis only selling oil in dollars, that means other countries have to buy dollars with whatever they can to trade oil, which allows americans to print infinite money because they can then just offload the dollars to other countries, thus not causing inflation in america, 2/3 of all dollars printed are outside of america, but now saudis are doing deals with the chinese and russians to trade in other currencies, which will cause countries to start dumping their dollars since they don't need it anymore for trading, all the dollars then flooding back into america will cause hyperinflation, that's the basic gist of it, there's other stuff like the swift and stuff too though

"origin": "https://finance.yahoo.com"
"user-agent": "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/110.0.0.0 Safari/537.36"
"referer": "https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/{ticker}/chart?p={ticker}".format(ticker=ticker)

pretty much, but that military protection is gradually getting worthless, especially with saudis signing a peace deal with iran and syria, which were the countries they were scared of in the middle east, so now they have no real reason to ask for protection from americans, of course there's other political matters too, like the murder of kashoggi causing a massive rift between the crown prince and the biden administration, while the crown prince is cozy with the russians and the chinese, and of course after the sanctions on russia after the war in ukraine caused russia to completely abandon the dollar and start trading in yuan and rupee, since the west couldn't get india to be on their side, with india also being cozy with the russians, so of course there's a lot going into it but yeah the gist of it is that america is using their military to have other countries soak up their inflation and with america's military relevance fading their inflation will go up now

it means Saudis, China, Russia are decoupling from petrodollar and the US reserve status is no more in a few years after BRICS introduces their own currency backed by gold for commodities trade.

Does it mean that other countries use the US dollar to conduct international trade and financial transactions?

Yes, that's what they do. If and Indian company buys something from a company in Kenya, they will most likely pay in dollars. They have dollars partly from buying it with their own currency, as in, pay a bank to give you dollars for Indian rupees. Another way they have dollars is through trade. In the example I said, that Kenyan company now has dollars that it can use to buy stuff from say an Australian company without having to convert local currency. Basically, everyone wants to be paid in dollars because others want to be paid in dollars. And the dollar is so dominant because to do business with the US, you need dollars and it's the biggest economy in the world, so lots of people do lots of business with them. It's also fairly stable and trusted, despite current inflation.

>I don't get it, why would they just not convert their currency to dollars immediately.

Because your currency might convert badly. You go to a US bank with a lot of Kenyan currency, you might not be able to get all the dollars you want, because the bank might not want Kenyan currency. After all, it's not used much outside of Kenya. So you might get only some dollars or get it at a very bad exchange rate because the bank doesn't like it. That's why everyone wants to get dollars for cheap any way they can.
China is trying to get the Yuan to have a similar role in international trade but it's getting traction pretty slowly. The Euro has taken over this role almost completely within EU (even countries that still have their own currency), but it's not used much outside of it. The rest of the world still mostly uses the dollar, which is an advantage to the US, since it's the only country that can simply make more of it and it's their domestic currency, so they have all the dollar they want while Kenya has to scrounge it together from wherever it can.

Thank you for explaining. It is interesting that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is having downstream effects on the dominance of the US dollar / petrodollar complex. I read news that India is buying oil from Russia for cheap. Is that something that is a result of Russia trading their oil in rupees? >would Yahoo become privy to it at all?
Hard to tell nowadays. When I was writing my Yahoo scapper it was deemed risky because they just shut down their public API. But that was years ago.

no one really knows how much oil russia trades with who now that they left the american trading system that used to track these things, it's mostly just speculation and most russian oil now goes through malaysia, china and india are increasingly using their own currencies instead of dollars but we'll see how things turn out, it could be a basket of currencies situation where everyone trades in different currencies, or the yuan taking over as the world currency, but that's unlikely because india doesn't want to hand that much power over to the chinese, there's also talks about a brics currency, possibly backed by gold, so far I haven't heard anything other than speculation about that but there's a lot of countries now lining up to join the brics banking system, egypt, bagladesh, uruguay and the uae already joined with other countries expressing interest in joining, we'll see what happens

I have a dumb question for the options chads.

What's to stop me from selling ATM covered calls on a relatively safe index like SPY or QQQ. The idea would be to maximize extrinsic value by selling ATM, around 30 DTE. If the index goes up the deltas would offset, but I keep the premium. If the index goes down I lower my cost basis, as I don't plan on selling the index ETF. I would roll to a new ATM covered call on expiration date if ITM. So just pure theta harvesting strategy.
