any actually technically literate anons in this board? I'm thinking about learning Solidity or whatever programming languages blockchains use the most so that I can validate a project's integrity and quality by myself instead of listening to paid shills on the internet.
is it a realistic and doable idea?

Yes it's pretty realistic if your goal is just to be able to get an understanding of what's going on.
Actually writing and creating a secure, novel smart contract is more difficult.
Ethereum and many other chains use its EVM, and yes almost every project that targets the EVM is coded in Solidity.
Learning about the EVM and Solidity enough to get a good grip on what's going on isn't that difficult if you have some basic knowledge of comp sci.
But if you do you need to know things like what an unsigned 256 bit integer is before even bothering to learn Solidity, among other basics. Luckily though all that stuff is pretty simple and also is good knowledge to have which transfers over to anything related to computation.
Can ask /g/ too for specifics with how to approach the basics(not that they'll necessarily help you, but maybe). Just don't mention anything about crypto or Solidity or they'll definitely not help you.

thank you for the insight. I'm learning Python and R (I'm a junior BI) so I wonder if what I learn from those two languages will be transferable to understanding smart contracts better? I don't have any prior background or experience in comp sci.

at your current skill level, are you able to, for example, read a token's mechanism to confirm whether their functions are working as the marketing claims say, or there are any vulnerable risks? I basically just don't wanna get scammed into lies that I could avoid with technical literacy

It's not that hard if you just put couple of hours for a week to learn the basics. The contracts are actually one of the most manageable parts. The challenge is the testing and deployment for me. But in your case, if you just learn the solidity to read contracts shouldn't take too long.

90% of learning programming is wrapping your concept around execution order and basic concepts like Variables, control flow(if, loops like while/for), functions, that sort of thing. As well as C-Like Syntax which is extremely widespread (Java, Javascript, Solidity all use it).

This transfers very widely, the vast majority of code you'll see requires these, and they're something people really struggle with.

Beyond that it's just data structures like arrays and such and then special language features for things like OOP(Object-Oriented-Programming).

But note that actually writing secure smart contracts is going to take a fair bit more work.

I'd be happy to go over a smart contract of your choice with you if you so wish or be available for questions. Reachable over a variety of media, I'll leave my Discord here, happy to throw you other contact information, just mention what you'd like. Zirok#7684

>> No.54329740

>>54329015
You should get a very solid grasp of "normal" non-smart contract/blockchain programming before trying to tackle Solidity. I.e you should be able to throw together a solid full-stack app that runs on microservices if you want dApps and shit to even make sense.
Smart contract programming is full of footguns that will lead to your contract getting exploited for all your money. It's hard to tell exactly if a token is a rug or not from reading the code if you haven't written one yourself

>> No.54330127

>>54329131
>I'm learning Python and R (I'm a junior BI) so I wonder if what I learn from those two languages will be transferable to understanding smart contracts better?
Yeah, you should be learning about data types, control flow, basic things like that which should transfer over. Hopefully they do cover the basics there, if not you'll want to learn them on your own anyway since it's useful knowledge.
>>54329131
Yes, once you have the basics down there are a lot of tools that automate a lot of that stuff, or help you simulate transactions to see what is actually happening and whether it's different than what you'd expect to see or not.
Security firms paid very larges sums of money to audit protocols still miss things from time to time though as well, so there is always a cat and mouse game going on. So you can't expect to ever be 100% sure.
But a lot of of contracts are simply boilerplate OpenZepplin contracts, or forks of some other established protocol like UniswapV2. So even just being able recognize what is being used, even if it's just a copycat(good thing in most cases in a security sense unless they're lying about it being something new, which is a separate issue) is pretty useful. And knowing how contracts can or can't changed is also helpful so you understand what the actual risks are.
But once you have some basics down there are lots of resources out there. If your goals are in understanding risk and such rather than creating contracts than resources/tools in the security realm are probably best for your purposes.

I've 10 years of experience in python, and I found that moving to Solidity was much harder than I thought. Js is much more useful in understanding Solidity and reading smrt contracts, I would recommend you get a solid grounding in Js before you try and move to Solidity. There are plenty of courses you can find for free. JewTube courses vary in quality massively, some are very specific i.e. >How to code x to do y
And some are just poor. I can recommend Alchemy University, great for a n00b as it's very practical based around coding challenges, but you don't need to mimic the instructor code to pass, as long as your code does what it should you can move on
>I am not affiliated in any way with Alchemy I just think is really good, if you don't mind a bunch of slack jawed normies in the Discord asking ser please how do I hello world

It's funny because Solidity being such a piece of shit was what kept me from getting into eth really early. It was mocked by tons of people who's technical opinions I respected, and even Gavin Wood couldn't seem to write a contract without having 300k eth stolen, or 500k locked up forever. And it being so bad with TheDAO reenterancy(which was a known issue and not that complicated) that they had to roll the whole chain back, which was unthinkable to anyone into bitcoin.
So Vitalik and all the other apparent cool kids were pushing Vyper as what was going to replace Solidity. So I thought no point in bothering learning Solidity or getting into this shit yet if it doesn't work. I like Python and dislike JS anyway so I'll just wait for Vyper to be ready to take over...but somehow they barely managed to make Solidity work just enough for that not to happen I guess. Maybe one day though since lots of people do like it and use it.
>>54330849
There should be some. Maybe not as much as before. I wish there was more discussion here. Once in a while though there are some good discussions.
Some people on twitter can be good despite it being pretty horrible overall. Probably some good discords, Eth R&D and Flashbots would be two that should be good since I think they're both official discords for their respective orgs.
This is a huge list of links, and I definitely can't vouch for any individual link on it(and if anything some of the domains might be expired by now and replaced by something sketchy, who knows), but there are definitely a lot of things I have used or seen mentioned. Most things listed don't look too useful now, but more useful once you know more:
