What the fuck does non-negotiable mean on a cheque? I tried googling the answer but I'm confused. I got some answers that said it's not a real cheque and can't be cashed (if that's the case what the fuck is the point of writing it?), some that said it's to protect the writer from the cheque being cashed into an account other than the one specified (why wouldn't every cheque be like this to begin with?), and other answer that read like jibberish.

You can put non negotiable on a check or void to avoid people filling it in and using the check, usually you do this to give your banking information to your employer. In most cases your employer gives you a non negotiable check and its more of a paystub stand in and the check cannot be used as your money is more than likely paid out via direct deposit

Cheques are a form of 'Negotiable Instrument'
A void cheque cannot be cashed or deposited, no bank will take it because they know the account holders bank will deny the funds.
A non-negotiable cheque is simply a tacit form of acknowledging the acceptance of the sum. Large companies will print non-negotiable on cheques because in the absence of any other documentation, like a written contract, it shows that the sum is agreed upon by the two parties - the payee's act of cashing the cheque is his acceptance of the sum. Good luck asking for more after you've cashed that cheque.
Any payment you get from an insurance company will say non-negotiable on it simply as a way to acknowledge it is a full and final settlement unless specified otherwise by the insurer.


You guys are thinking of Non-Redeemable which used to get printed on those $1,000,000 fake cheques mailed out by advertisers in the 90's. As well non-transferable would mean that you can't endorse the cheque over to someone else - as if anyone still does that.
