Right, that would be the only way to get the PK. Seed phrase or physical access to the device itself + PIN. Anon I was replying to was suggesting that a hacker could get access to the seed/PK through an infected USB driver (or OS, or BIOS). That would be true if PK was stored on conventional flash memory, like a flash drive. But the chipset used in Ledger/Trezor to store the PK is specifically designed to be write-only (it can only write using the PK for signatures), so no matter what you plug it into, regardless of how terribly filled with malware - nothing is going to get to the PK. This is the chief advantage of having a hardware wallet vs just using an encrypted archive on a generic flash drive.

>reality is if you’re one small accident away
Yeah, I mean people are able to get into this stuff without any a priori knowledge of, well... even the most rudimentary knowledge of cryptography. Never having even heard the terms "public key" or "private key" before. For someone with cybersecurity experience/education, it comes second nature. For someone who has spent a reasonable amount of time reading up on the subject and conceptualizing the process of encryption, it won't be second nature but they will know enough to not fuck up. Ever. It boils down to a binary understanding: public = PUBLIC, private = PRIVATE.

I would say the vast majority of people are capable of understanding the fundamentals of cryptography. It's just that they choose not to because it doesn't interest them. Then they come into crypto to speculate and don't really give a shit about how any of it actually works. Even after being told again and again that they should educate themselves, they will willfully ignore it "I don't care how it works, I just want to gamble". And then things like OP happens. That's just human nature at it's core - willful ignorance being exploited, again and again. Crypto is but a small subset of that, one that we can all verify and see plain as day on a public ledger. So it's the most obvious and egregious... and yet, the most honest, the most evident.

If people were somehow forced to educate themselves how any of this shit works before getting involved in it, the probability they would get scammed would go down somewhat. But not a lot. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.

Crypto was never going to go mainstream anyway.

If something doesn't pass the mainstream test then it will never be a thing: Find a group of 15-25 year old girls. If you don't hear them mention a topic or if you ask them about the topic and they don't have a bunch of talking points about the topic, then said topic/thing is not in the overton window of normies. Society is built to cater to women, who are the primary consumers on the planet.

Until you see random stacies walking around with hardware wallets, your LE CRYPTO SECRET CLUB will never make you truly rich.

>> No.54297342

>>54297278
>Crypto was never going to go mainstream anyway
Maybe so. But I think the point you are really making is that *self custody* will never go mainstream. Which has always been the case throughout history regardless of financial medium. The vast majority of people are incapable of self custody, for various reasons. Hence if BTC ever went "mainstream", it would be via custodians much like banks. In the end, nothing much would change for the average person. If anything it would just affect the collateralization on the settlement layer happening between custodians in the background. The primary difference between that and what we have now, is that you *could* be your own custodian, of settlement layer collateral, if you wished. And unlike gold, you could store a lot of it very securely, for very cheap. And move it cheaply as needed.

There’s wilful ignorance and then there’s genuine accidents. If you sincerely believe that you deserve to lose everything because you made an accident then you’re a retard. Accidents and genuine mistakes will always happen, doesn’t matter who you are. Think about it in the most basic terms of a system and how it functions. If we propose that cryptocurrencies will provide a system where the expected outcome of a user making an accident is for them to lose everything with no recourse, then that’s simply a garbage design and it will never see mainstream adoption. Yep. Humans gonna human.
>Social recovery does feel a a good middle ground solution.
And now we're right back to the source of the problem laid out in the bitcoin genesis block. Socialized losses. Who's going to pay them? All the responsible people who took the time to understand how to self custody in a secure manner? Why would someone risk making an honest mistake to "lose everything" in the first place? Why do people self custody at all, if its such a stupid risk? Security, of course is one reason, if they are going to hold funds in any custody at all, better their own than a counterparty. But also, to escape a system predicated on socialized losses. If they simply wanted to speculate, they could do so through regulated futures contracts and avoid custody issue altogether. But then they are taking on the same risk of socialized losses and rule changing that comes with being in that system. Or having their funds frozen because... the government said so. The bank said so. The FED said so. Bailouts for me, not for thee... etc. Government sponsored systems can become quite fickle in times of chaos. A decentralized network built on cryptographic algorithms, on the other hand, won't change the rules when times get tough.

There are ways to perform self custody which are more user friendly. Achieving maximum security in a cryptographic system is always going to be marginally technical. That's a tradeoff in any security system: security vs efficiency. Current self custody systems are primitive, but they do what they were designed to do well, if you know how to use them correctly. They can take the PK from you physically, if you store the entire phrase in one location... but if you scatter it like a good pirate's treasure, they won't even be able to do that. There's no form of wealth which could be stored as securely

This is why the safest approach is just to keep your crypto in the Coinbase vault for long-term. Most of us are too stupid or reckless or barely understand what this shit even does to safely store if for 5-10 years on some gayass USB stick.

I'll take my chances with the .1% odds that an exchange too big to fail goes down vs. me fucking up and getting hacked or losing my shit and then being pissed at myself forever.

Normalfaggots are NOT the target of crypto.
The target is either:
1) rich smart people who desire absolute sovereignty over a significant part of their funds and an hedge in case banking/the state fails/goes after them (read about Lebanon or Cyprus)
2) absolute destitute thirdies who only have a phone and an internet access in shitholes with no real financial infrastructures for them.
Crypto is a sigmoid.

Crypto will only go mainstream with the use of centralised platforms, 99% of crypto activity will take place on Coinbase etc.

Retards who are just gambling $500 on shitcoins have no need to even bother with self custody

Waited until funds were loaded and bridged out. But I thought you needed the physical ledger connected via USB to your computer to confirm transfers, unless they duped the hardware signature to another ledger.

It's unlikely. The real reason is 1) he's fud larping. 2) his seed was leaked by being a dumbass

Not a hardware wallet, but the same principle, a vulnerability or intentional error in the generation of addresses lead to only a small possible pool of possible addresses being generated. This was then reverse engineered and lots of eth addresses got cleared out.
This can happen to or be discovered with hardware wallets as well, which is why you should generate your own wallet and import it.

If someone finds the seed, they still won't be able to get into your accounts without the passphrase. If they get the passphrase, they won't be able to get in without the seed. Keep the passphrase and seed stored in separate locations (maybe store the passphrase on an AES-256 encrypted archive on a flash drive + uploaded to cloud or some shit).
