If I'm moving my coins from pvc flips to tubes, should I give them a quick wipe first? Or do I only need to do that if I notice some residue on them?

I didn't know pvc could corrode coins so I'm not sure if only sustained contact is what corrodes them or if the pvc plastic leaves a residue even after you've removed them from the flips.

One thing to point out is that silver doesn't corrode per se, it tarnishes when reacting to sulfur in general. I think it was either last year or the year before when someone in these threads posted what happened to their asahi rounds when they shoved it all in what they thought was a good moneybag but found their coins turning color. Someone should still have the pic saved of what amounts to silver /g/uro.

don't wipe down your beautiful silver and gold you'll leave scratches lol
if you're paranoid about pvc damage soak it in acetone (nail polish remover) and it comes right off. likely you have zero pvc damage though because it takes years to set it. if your metals don't have a noticeable green sheen you have nothing to worry about. in fact wiping it down likely wouldn't do anything as pvc damage is a chemical reaction

>> No.54235612

>>54235538

Gotcha. I've been storing them in the flips they came with for over a year now and haven't noticed any tarnishing at all yet, so I get that it's a slow process, but I'd like to keep them looking nice.
It would suck even more to go through all the trouble to put them into the tubes just to have them tarnish anyways because the flips left a residue behind that continued reacting with the silver.
If that isn't the case, though, and it's just the sustained contact with the pvc flip that causes the reaction, then I'll just stuff them into the tubes and not worry about it.

>> No.54235617

>>54235406

>I didn't know pvc could corrode coins
+ gold and silver are one of the few metals that don't "corrode" it's more that the material in the pvc breaks down over time and leaves a residual coating on the coin. hence why the acetone would do it good. with gay copper it's much worse tuoufh. copper and cupronickel will corrode and stain real ugly.

you're really just being paranoid anon pvc damage only sets in on boomer collections that have been sitting in the flips for years and years. just look up "pvc coin damage" and you'll get a good idea of what it actually is. dealers even transport coins around in flips like that if they're only keeping them in there for a few days. not to mention that most coin supply distributors are now aware of the pvc damage situation and are switching to pvc analogues that don't chemically degrade

Anyone think about using hardshell electronics cases to stack their shinies? You can find them for less than 15$ anywhere and they come with mesh pouches on the top lid. Could stash the lower section with a bunch of silver and securely tuck away some gold in the top. >> No.54237101

>>54236921
hmm, what type of cleaning are you talking about specifically
There is cleaning, dusting, polishing, and removing tarnish using different methods which include chemicals or machining with abrasives
If your silver is toned, I would recommend against removing it, as removing it wears down the silver over time and damages it, and toning can protect the surface of the metal
Also could be tough to remove tarnishing without damaging as well
But if your silver has dirt or grime or dust or silt or muck or guck or other material that is not within the surface of the metal but on top of the surface, some simple non-ionized water and light dish soap typically can do the job of removing all that stickiness and gunk off the silver,

Yeah that's exactly what I want to do. Apparently (from what the coin dealer told me when I asked, they might work differently now) a lot of times NGC or PCGS will give you multiple "free" submissions when you first sign up so my plan is to just wait until I have about 10 or so coins I think would be worth getting slabbed and go from there. Personally I kindof like them, not really after a number grade for resale, these are for me. They feel nice to hold and definitely offer more protection than a cardboard flip.

Change as a whole will see major gains in the next decades as if they were mini baby peace and morgan dollars. It’s on the edge of schizo theory crafting but if we see a true transition to electronic currency the physical coins will immediately become collectibles.

Got copper pennies and nickels in bags at the moment and all my change gets pilfered. Any other options besides the holy and devine 1s and 5s? Quarters will cool designs? Dollar coins?

Here's something interesting I noticed on the US mint website: Despite silver being cheaper, the US mint RAISED the price of their silver proof sets, including older sets such as the 2021 set. https://catalog.usmint.gov/silver-proof-set-2021-21RH.html?cgid=proof-sets#start=1 this definitely used to be $105, I bought it for that much just last december and that's the price the red book says it was issued at. But other products, such as the Palladium eagle got cheaper to account for lower Palladium prices.https://catalog.usmint.gov/american-eagle-2022-one-ounce-palladium-reverse-proof-coin-22EK.html?cgid=palladium-coins#start=1
Could the US mint be anticipating silver prices to rise, and they made the sets more expensive to account for this?

God I wish. The 6.250 gram silver version is cool but the burnishing on Nu-S-A commemorative coinage is so aggressive it's hard to make out details. A 5ozt bullion strike version of this would be beyond kino
>>54237379
Pay attention to the obverse of quarters. It's the first and only Washington quarter since 1998 to have the date on the front, along with a slightly higher relief Washington Sculpt. The State Quarters series lowered the relief to account for having to make a bunch of new die designs all the time, that's a very real cost of mintage.
But with over a year of circulation any you find in change are probably going to start looking grungy. Not impossible, just found a nice one earlier today.

If you're really wanting gold, you can look at jmbullion as an example of the coins and do the math for what's acceptable to you.
A 1oz is about 2060, whereas a 1/2 oz is 1200 -> (1oz total would be 2400) and 1/4oz is 630 -> (1oz total would be 2500 ish)
So it's up to you there. I would see the benefit in maybe having a few small pieces if you ever think you'll be in a weird situational bargaining position, but otherwise I only see the 1oz as worth it to not waste 25% of your funds.
Obviously it's a different matter if you feel the price is about to shoot up and you only have so much.

Crypto is like any other investment - DYOR and invest only what you can afford to lose. Especially right now.
No one on this planet knows for sure how long the lights will continue to be on before the next time they turn off (temporarily but it could still be a while). Or even just some events that makes cashing out on your investments impossible (like war or natural disasters).
I have some investments that I'm sure CAN do well eventually and let me buy more PMs, however, I've seen good projects go up in smoke for a variety of reasons that aren't the fault of those working on them. Hacks, war, disasters, economic troubles.
Definitely have to consider your emergency food and water supply. Be it PMs or investments, things can get bad to the point of needing those to survive and reach the point where you can really reap the benefits of PMs or shares of something that have become worth more than you bought them for.

Uh, do you know where you are?
Is there any hope with €uro coins becoming numismatics? I remember back in the day of the gute, alte DMark, you occasionally found some "Bank Deutscher Länder" stuff, from the first years (or months even?) of the existance of modern day Germany, or pic related, which AFAIK was the only modern German coin to contain any silver at all, but with the €uro coins, I just don't see anything.
Sure, there's some folks that like to collect every countries coins, and I can respect that, but outside of Vatican, there isn't any rarity or value in it.
Then there's some limited mintage ones, but I personally dislike artificial rarity or "collectible" items. This whole

A few threads back, some anon argued that
>as soon as CBDC gets introduced and cash will get removed, all physical fiat will become collectible!!
or something like that, but I highly doubt it!
Looking at Germany, as of 2020 there are still 6.6 Billion DMark in cash floating around. At 80 Million Germans that's 80 Mark per Person on average. Of course there's a lot of "Germans" that have never seen DMark, so that ought to be distributed differently and a lot of that is certainly lost forever, but there must be quite a few folks who willingly have hundreds of Marks that they could easily exchange into €uros, yet they don't.
So I guess that
>if a currency is gone, it becomes collectible!
idea is bullshit.

With increasing applications for PMs I believe the price will continue to raise over the years slowly. And I say that as someone who could sell their existing gold for more than it was bought.

>Nice bird too. What is that, ptolemic?
Yep, a Ptolemy II bronze Drachm from Egypt, that one weighs 67 grams, the fuggers are bigboi chonkers. They also made octobols (8/6ths or 1 and 1/3rd drachm) that weigh ~95+g but nice ones will set ya back $1000 or more. I'll get one someday. For reasons I haven't investigated yet silver was scarce in the ptolemaic kingdom so within the borders they functioned on a largely bronze-standard, much like early Republican Rome with their gigantic "Aes Grave" (heavy bronze) coinage standard, with each cast bronze coin weighing up to around 341 grams. I'll get one of them someday too, but you're looking at $2000 minimum for a nice example. Rome didn't strike their first silver coins until around 280 BC, much later than the rest of the Mediterranean. Copperchads would have felt quite at home back when big purchases required wagonloads of bulky base metal.

Though sometimes, there's some commorative things that just speak to me, but that's rather rare. Or for memetic reasons. I admit that I'm quite fond of the old commemorative half dollars, many are quite beautiful and their rarity is largely a reflection of actual demand instead of a pre-ordained mintage cap so I'd love to collect them. All I have thus far are the Columbian Exposition and Stone Mountain halves which are rather lame compared to the more coomworthy designs out there.

>next quarters are going to be young athletes
What the hell, we can't even get good coins in 2027 that sucks. Even the 1$ brass coins have a pretty cool series right now, they're based on the innovations and Inventions of each state. I got the 2021 reverse proof set for the official PONG coin but they're brASS, I don't want to stack these things meaningfully.

Side note, I wonder what the sales numbers are going to be for the silver proof sets of this series. Even though the ATB series had incredible designs they sold a lot worse than the State quarters series.
Even the worst selling Silver state quarter set (2008, 763,887) did better than the best selling ATB set that has sales numbers (2010, 585,401). 2021 I can only assume fucking bombed considering the mint STILL has it for sale three years later. Plus, the economy really hit the shitter in Biden's inaugural year of 2021, 2021 had less coins, AND it sold for higher prices so I can only imagine it'll be the worst selling ATB set by a lot. I'm going to laugh my head off when the women's silver sets fail to break even 100,000 sold.

I like the dollar coin with the gears in the back and the Georgia one as well. The pong one is pretty kino too. If only they actually all circulated. The innovation dollar series is a much better idea than what the mint currently is doing.
They should release the brass dollars in silver like they do with quarters.
>Side note, I wonder what the sales numbers are going to be for the silver proof sets of this series. Even though the ATB series had incredible designs they sold a lot worse than the State quarters series.
My guess is the quarter ecosystem is over saturated with designs. As a lad I collected all the 50 state quarters and was so proud of it. Even then I didn't bother with the atb ones because they were of places I had never heard of most of the time. By the end of this and the next series, think of all the designs of quarters there will be. Probably 150-200.

2k is a panic signal but due to manipulation, gold never sits at 2k for more than like 2 hours so normies never notice. Remember it takes normies like 1.5 weeks to become aware of what we learn like 5 minutes after it happens. I guarantee if gold sits at 2k for more than 3 days, the most informed normies notice that on the market and they panic and pump snowballing everything and if that lasts long enough for the rest to catch up then it's gg.

Pretty similar experience with quarters. Had a blast finding the State series as a kid and still have my old quarter board under a shelf. My flipboard didn't account for the 6 2009 territory quarters so didn't get those, and then never bothered with the ATB series until late 2020, when I learned they were about to end. Getting all the silver proof sets feels like being a kid again, getting hyped over what new designs I get to look at. Some of them are really beautiful. I'm especially fond of 2012's Hawaii volcanoes, so is everybody else by the aftermarket price.
You're definitely right about quarters, there's just too damn many right now. Change up Nickels again or DIMES, I don't think we ever had a commemorative dime design other than the 24 karat Merc. Dimes have been the most boring US coin for nearly 80 years now, just some goofy looking commie traitor obverse and a torch reverse. Commemorative halves would be pretty cool but they never circulate anymore.

I don't even hate them but 80 years for one design is pretty retarded. Literally every coin has had the same people on it for way too long. A Teddy Roosevelt dime would be pretty bad ass though. Doubt it. Bet we'll get is a Rosa Parks dime or some shit like that lmao.
>Even visually our currency is debased to hell and back, Banknotes don't even look pretty anymore
When even the penny is debased then it really shows how far we've fallen. I do actually really like the 100 dollar bill design however. I remember being autistically obsessed with it as a poor kid. The five and 10 are bleh, the 20 and 50 are meh-better, and the 1 & 2 are old, but the 2 is still a classic.
I still think the mid 2000s 5 dollar bill was the ugliest one of them all. I guess it's about as bad looking as the modern one so not that ugly. My 2 cents anyways.

Ugly paper notes especially piss me off. Coins are constrained by the limitations of sculpting, but you can draw ANYTHING on paper. It's not ugly out of any practical reason, you're still using engraved plates and ink so it's not like the cost is any cheaper with these ugly shit notes. They're just ugly because the fed are Godless, miserable, deniers of Logos who are incapable of perceiving or producing beauty. Unless it's a form of degenerate Tikkun Olam such as Gucci bags that ends up resembling beauty, of course.
We can, and have had genuinely beautiful banknotes. But they don't want us to be happy, sophisticated, or joyful. Cattle who are dead inside make better Mcburger and Factory workers, you can't think about how miserable your working conditions are if you don't think at all.
