Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized P2P privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and fungible, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- In other words, the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a user willingly providing a view key.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptocurrencies. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of transactions increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier to entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward gradually approached 0.6 XMR in June 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

START MINING IN P2POOL
>START MINING IN P2POOL
START MINING IN P2POOL
>START MINING IN P2POOL

P2Pool combines the advantages of pool and solo mining; you still fully control your Monero node and what it mines, but you get frequent payouts like on a regular pool.

P2Pool has no central server that can be shut down/blocked because it uses a separate blockchain to merge mine with Monero. There's no pool admin that can control what your hashrate is used for or decide who can mine on the pool and who can't. It's permissionless!

Decentralized pool mining (P2Pool) is pretty much the ultimate way to secure a PoW coin against 51% attacks. Once P2Pool reaches & maintains 51%+ of the total network hashrate, Monero will be essentially invulnerable to such attacks.

Although many inexperienced miners think that bigger pools give better profits, this is absolutely NOT the case. Your profits in the long run depend ONLY on your hashrate, NOT on the pool's hashrate.

>YOU CAN NOW MINE IN P2POOL FASTER & EASIER THAN EVER BEFORE WITH THE GUPAX GUI. USES TRUSTED REMOTE NODES BY DEFAULT!!!!

1. Download the *bundled* version of Gupax for your OS here: https://gupax.io/downloads/
2. Extract somewhere (Desktop, Documents, etc)
3. Launch Gupax
4. Input your Monero address in the [P2Pool] tab. USE A SEPARATE MINING-ONLY WALLET!
5. Select a Community Monero Node that you trust, although you can and should run your own node if possible.
6. Start P2Pool
7. Start XMRig

VIDEO GUIDE: https://gupax.io/guide/

You are now mining to your own instance of P2Pool, welcome to the world of decentralized peer-to-peer mining!

>NOTE THAT DUE TO BOTNET SHENANIGANS XMRIG IS AUTO-FLAGGED AS MALWARE BY MOST ANTI-VIRUSES, SO DON'T FREAK OUT!!!

START RUNNING AN I2P NODE
>START RUNNING AN I2P NODE
START RUNNING AN I2P NODE
>START RUNNING AN I2P NODE

>What is I2P?

I2P is an anonymized P2P overlay network akin to the Tor network but with several key advantages over it. I2P is now replacing Tor as the go-to darknet and will play a pivotal role in growing the Monerocentric economy.

>Why should I care? Why should I run a node?

Increasing shadow economy adoption and the proliferation of an XMR-only standard are what guarantee that XMR will have a floor and won't also crash to zero when the Crypto Casino finally implodes. XMR's long-term outlook is therefore *strongly* correlated with the darknet, you may have already noticed how the number of TXs begins to drop whenever the glowies attack & cripple the Tor network, which underscores just how critical it is that the darknet wins this war against the State. Make no mistake: if the darknet is allowed to die XMR will take a devastating hit as well.

So by running an I2P node you are helping to make the network Monero thrives in that much more robust while also enraging glowies in the process. Win-win!

>OK, but how difficult is it? Do I have to store GBs worth of data like when running an XMR node?

It is literally as easy as installing an Android app and no, there are no storage requirements, the node only consumes some bandwidth.

>Cool, I'm sold. What do?

If you have no interest in browsing the darknet yourself then the simplest solution is to install & run the I2Pd Android app on any compatible (Android 4.1+) device, ideally a TV box since they don't require recharging and are permanently online. But any old phone or tablet is fine too. Make sure you activate "start on boot" in the settings.

Otherwise just install the appropriate desktop client and leave it running.

The console is accessed via http://127.0.0.1:7070/ or the menu in Android.

>No tail emission = Bitcoin is fucked

Right now, at the current hashrate, miners break even on energy expenses at a BTC price of $22K. Post 2024 halving, that break even point, at the current hashrate, goes up to $44K. If BTC does not go to $44K, miners will be unprofitable and hashrate will have to drop (miners going out of business) to reduce the cost of securing the network, also reducing the security.

If you know anything about the power of 2, you already know that things get very big, very fast. If we’re 3 halvings into 32 total halvings, then the estimated break even point for miners at current hashrate going into the last halving would be:

$22,000 * (2^27) = $2,952,790,016,000 per BTC

$2,952,790,016,000 per BTC * 21 Million total Bitcoin = $62,008,590,336,000,000,000 BTC Market Cap

The block rewards shrink so fast that after enough halvings Bitcoin would eventually require a $2.95 trillion price per Bitcoin and a $62 quintillion market cap to sustain the current cost of $7.15 billion/year.

Even if these numbers were somehow realistic, can you imagine securing a $62 quintillion market cap on only $7.15 billion/year of hashrate? LOL.

And that’s assuming energy costs do not increase at all over the next 120 years, which they will.

So basically BTC mining will eventually become so unprofitable the hashrate (network security) will shrivel up UNLESS it is subsidized by BTC transaction fees.

can you actually set the tx fee amount of a transaction you are about to make?
i was thinking the other day that if xmr goes to moon (not a moonfag, just an hypothetical case) let's say 50k per xmr, then the tx fee is going to be pretty high, around 0.00003 xmr or $1.5 usd.
how would this work?

custom tx fees are a heuristic which can de-anonymize you. This is why all monero wallets use the same fee-selection algorithm. I wouldn't worry about it anon, trying to micro-manage your fees is bad for your privacy.
If monero is like $50k we can just split the chain and do atomic swaps between them.
At that point we are talking global adoption, so we have bigger problems (opportunities) than fees on mainnet!

Monero will have a lower supply than bitcoin until 2040. In 2040-2050 bitcoin will succumb to selfish mining attacks due to vanishing miner reward as tx fees cannot keep up[1][2]. In Monero, the block reward stays constant to protect the network, but annual inflation as a % of total supply (inflationary effect) still asymptotically trends to zero.

Ah, there we go, the Appeal to Price Action, the maxipad's last line of defense kek.

Here's the thing, if you know you're in a clownworld market then you know 2 key things:

#1: to not take ANY price action seriously as long as literal dog memes are cracking the Top 10

#2: that sanity will eventually return to the market and when that happens, fundamentals will finally be rewarded.

And *this* is why holding Monero is SO comfy! Namely, because you can actually observe its adoption in relevant real-world markets increasing over time you can be sure its fundamentals are rock-solid and that it won't go crashing to zero along with all the other useless memecoins once this hype-fueled house of cards finally collapses.

Over the years Blockstream developed into a leviathan in the bitcoin world, eventually getting to the point (still to this day) where most of the people further developing bitcoin are hand-picked by blockstream. This has lead to this majority of sponsored devs deciding against features that would have made Bitcoin better, because it allowed Blockstream to effectively sell a solution.

Fast forward to today and on-chain BTC transactions are laughably expensive and slow, while a 2nd layer solution that promotes centralization and a banking-like power structure. BTC has effectively been turned into a bank if you want to use it regularly.

Not to mention the ASIC megafarms and manufacturers and their shenanigans. Decentralization needs to extend beyond hashrate on the chain and also cover the companies and organizations producing things or doing things with/for monero.

kinda disheartening seeing Seth pick this path, for now. Bitcoin privacy is not good enough for the n00bs. It is literally irresponsible to let your loved ones use BTC without first teaching them

1) how to run their own Ronin Dojo node (or, you can run for them and share them the node .onion address for them to connect to)
2) how to use Samourai Whirlpool to obfuscate the history of the coins they get into their wallets
3) how to use the collaborative two person coinjoins with another person

Without using BTC /this way/ it is quite dangerous for a normie to use Bitcoin.

So, no, it is not "good enough" by default.

>they are dedicated to having 1MB blocks still. So all this mixing and stuff will cost you a pretty penny on bitcoin.
That's correct. For months now, bitcoin on-chain fees are high. There are tens of thousands of waiting transactions trying to enter the next block. That backlog never gets cleared out and that sustains high fee rates. For example, now it is more than a dollar to enter the next block. And that is a huge turnoff for me (a third world'er, dollar is expensive).

Even though Samourai whirlpool had a 25℅ discount rate for the last 3 days, due to high btc on chain fees, I did not use the Whirlpool coinjoin.

I can't imagine normies paying this much (and higher in the future, too) fee to get in a block in the next hour.

Contrast this UX with XMR: pay a penny. Get into the next block. Transaction fees get cheaper as more users use it, due to dynamic block size. Private by default, always.

BTC is inferior.

Encouraging king shitcoin adoption is no different than sticking with fiat unironically. It encourages the development of a transparent immutable record of every financial transaction ever made. It is the death of privacy forever and the enslavement of humanity.
The more it is adopted the more resources are devoted to surveillance of it, more people have their lives ruined because they trusted 'good enough' privacy tools that inevitably turn out to be not good enough. It wastes resources that could have gone to developing actual privacy solutions on something which will never be private by design.

Now for some extremely dumb reason he decided it was time to post on his blog about how he's dedicating his time to bitcoin instead of monero. There's a lot of discussion going on it Matrix over this which I encourage everyone to read.

tx_extra should not be removed, but strictly limited to either 0 or 256 bytes. Removal is a short-sighted solution which doesn't even solve the problem* and may hold Monero back in the long term by limiting its flexibility.

*I'll go into a little more detail here. People who want to store data on-chain can and will use outputs instead if tx_extra is removed. Output spam is much worse for Monero than tx_extra, because output bloat can never be pruned, and reduces privacy for the entire network.

So for people who have a legitimate reason to store a little bit of data on-chain (DEX's, atomic swaps, or anything else which builds on Monero), they'd either be forced to scrap their project or cause needless harm to the network if tx_extra is removed. Illegitimate usage like Ordinals wouldn't be able to fit on-chain either way, but smaller 32-byte commitments could, so it's the same situation.

So in short there's no actual harm in keeping tx_extra, at least not compared to output spam. Meanwhile removal would bring unnecessary costs to the network, fail to solve the problem it's intended to, and limit Monero's capability to be extended.

This seems reasonable. Then there's no chance of morons spamming the chain with NFTs (or, the CIA spamming CP onto the chain as an excuse to take it down) using tx_extra as an attack vector.

I suppose you can use the output field if you wanted, but you can't transfer these "NFTs" since you would need to have the private key for this output, no? That is, you'd "send" your image by turning it to base 58 and then have an output to an address with the same bytes as your image, no? If there is a different way to do it then I'd be curious as to how it would actually work.

I think the main thing is that we shouldn't have tx_extra allowed to bloat the chain by massive amounts for no reason.

Outputs as they exist on-chain are very different from the "addresses" which we give to each other to send around Monero. Outputs are ultimately just pseudorandom bytes, so if you know what you're doing then you can store anything in them.

I agree, tx_extra definitely needs to be restricted. My point is just that outright removal is not a good idea IMO.

I wonder if it's possible to produce a proof that an output is real or not, and have similar limitations for projects that would use tx_extra (atomic swaps, etc.), or perhaps have nodes exclude tx_extra by default? (so it's just a hash in the merkel tree? idk.). That would solve this whole situation.

>> No.54164958

>>54164810

No, it's not possible. Any restriction you place can be bypassed in some way.

And the problem is not really the raw space which people can use tx_extra to waste. They'd have to pay higher fees anyway. It's a factor, but not the big one. The real issue is that it can be abused to spam crap like ordinals, and can harm fungibility. Like I said it's impossible to prevent spam, but the damage caused by it can be at mitigated to a certain extent.

One option is to just start spamming it with gore, racism, etc. until they realize it's uncool to host a block explorer for it or be involved in it in any way.

Another option is to just ignore it. This is sort of cringe, but maybe also report it on github under "cryptocurrency abuse/malware" and basically just describe it as a form of malware that forces other cryptocurrency users to download and store unwanted files (that are racist and sexist and say the n word oh no!), and spams the network with false outputs which makes the network unsafe for users and de-anonymizes them.

Wouldn't Jamtis solve this "building block" problem?
From what I got, it changes the structure of keys such as to allow the receiver to send back XMR without needing to share anything at all. Isn't this the major use for tx_extra anyways?

As the twitter user explains, jamtis will also "fix" it by increasing the ringsize, so the threat of output spamming is decreased.

But to be fair, if someone is going out of their way to use tx_extra to indicate they are fucking with outputs, that's really more of a blackball than output spamming.

It's just when price action is the primary or sole reason for someones involvement in a cryptocurrency project, they are no longer a user or a supporter and become a speculator and in all likelihood their intention from the start was to buy at X, wait until it rises to Y, then dump it all on newbies, sock it in index funds and forget it ever existed. Clearly this is not good for longevity.

Bad advice, he can literally just start monerod in a terminal with the “—prune-blockchain” or run “prune_blockchain” in the interactive console.

Just make sure you also use “—data-dir” when running monerod so you are actually pointing it at the existing blockchain and not just syncing a whole new pruned copy. The folder your blockchain is stored in by default is ~/.bitmonero/ on linux and C:\ProgramData\bitmonero on windows

I think (haven’t tried, always host full nodes) to sync a pruned node from scratch you’d have to run monerod with “—sync-pruned-blocks”, otherwise you have to sync the full chain and then prune it yourself with the other options I mentioned.

Zcash is the 'https of blockchains,' protecting your freedom to save and spend as you like.

Zcash was the first project to implement zk-SNARKs, a novel form of zero-knowledge cryptography that gives its users the strongest privacy available in any digital currency.

Multiple, independent organizations are funded to innovate on Zcash.

Can someone give me a tutorial for a moderate IQ person on how to mine XMR effectively? I am lucky enough to be moving into an apartment in which my rent covers all utilities, including electricity. And I've always heard that electric rates were the biggest drain, so I'm wondering what to do. A current mining calculator website said that with my CPU I would make barely more than a dollar's worth of XMR each month.

What should I invest in, and is there anyway that I could seriously profit from mining XMR? Is it possible to spend like 1000-2000 on a rig and then make over 200 or 300 dollars per month on XMR (assuming current xmr value)?

If you have free electricity you might as well let your desktop mining 24/7. Just make sure you're not going into crazy temperatures and it should be alright. It's literally free monero.
I think that most people here in this thread at least should have a home server, and you can always set it up to mine during idle times. I use mine to solo mine because I use the mindset that hashes are nothing more than lottery games.
It's also useful to learn how to mine because you actually participate in the network and learn a lot in the journey.

>Outputs are ultimately just pseudorandom bytes
Yeah that's what I meant. Basically they could take the bytes for the image and "send xmr" in the form of an output with this arbitrary byte sequence. But how would you be able to control the output (required to say you "own" the NFT and to transfer it) unless you could generate an address with control over the output (which, how could you generate that?)

i.e my image is some byte vector A, I "send" xmr by broadcasting that I am signing off ownership to an output (as close to A as possible, perhaps you have to pad if there is a checksum? not sure how this works) and then you could turn this byte vector (in output form) into an image by extracting the relevant image bytes. But you wouldn't be able to actually move this output around, right? Would you not have to generate the private key for this output from the output itself (should be impossible?) Or is that not how this works. I have some idea of how cryptography works but the entire Monero output/input/ringsig parts of the cryptosystem are not within my sphere of knowledge.

You don't need to "own" the output for it to work. There are other ways of transfering the ords which bypass the way regular Monero transactions work. Without going into exhausting detail, transfering the ord via spending normal outputs (which is how it's currently done) is patchable separately and has no relation to the tx_extra issue. Anyway, the network would view the output as any other public key, when in reality it's just pseudo-random bytes to which no "private key" is known.

>>54185180

If it's small enough then removing tx_extra won't solve anything, instead they will use output spam which is even worse. See >>54163631

It took me last night to figure out that you can't build the whole project with just their patches, because it introduces bugs that fail compile on some targets.
learn how to use GNU make to build a specific target. Also, the simplewallet target just builds "monero_wallet_cli". The executable is not actually called "simplewallet", that is just an internal name for the code that all wallet frontends use.

Ignore the noise. Focus on the signal:

1) Halo2 crypto coming to monero, which will enable full membership proofs (anon set per enote scaling to the whole blockchain): https://github.com/monero-project/research-lab/issues/100

2) seraphis + jamtis upgrade allowing privacy preserving light wallets, full view-only wallets and larger ring sizes (like 256): https://lbry.projectsegfau.lt/@monerocommunityworkgroup:8/justin-berman-seraphis-jamtis-feature-2:7

3) Monero-centric decentralized exchange SeraiDEX, which will increase Monero liquidity without ((centralized exchanges)), is coming soon: https://nitter.snopyta.org/SeraiDEX/status/1636761872547610625#m

4) Molly.im, a signal messenger fork, working hard to get Monero wallet & payments integrated into its mobile app: https://repo.getmonero.org/monero-project/ccs-proposals/-/merge_requests/252

All of these are bullish on Monero. If you are reading these lines, there is literally no reason not to get at least a suicide stack of Monero and at best getting 69 XMR in your personal wallet. Bury your hoarded XMR into a featherwallet.org wallet and also bury that wallet into an encrypted persistent storage in tails.boum.org system.

Come and find it.

Divegrass frens, /xmr/ are back for a somewhat surprise appearance in place of the last Test Cup's champions, /biz/ in the 2023 Spring Test Cup over this weekend and next.

While it's kinda a nothingburger event on a side channel while /vt/ (and next week /mlp/) have a league in the main cup channel it's still a test run for the return to PES 19 and to test the new patch before the main 2023 4chan Spring Babby Cup happens with a few of the main cup teams and some bonus invitational teams making an appearance to test the new updates and rule changes that have happened since the Winter Cup earlier this year

Team-wise /xmr/ have had a few changes; McAfee is now a permanent player and both Fluffy and POOMPA join the roster and we have two new kits. Kick off is at 18:20 UTC and 14:20 ET with more info on both the event (link to channel on tournament page) and team below.

It's probably just one or two lines of code:

What exactly do they mean with:
"Build the CLI wallet (targeting simplewallet in make)"
I build it with:
make release-static-win64 simplewallet

oh sorry I forgot to get back to you

make clean
go to root dir of monero, make cmake-release
go to build dir, make simplewallet (and daemon, but you can just connect to a remote daemon)
use monero-cli-wallet, make a wallet, fund it, and use mint_ordinals like it says and wait 10 mins for it to show up

It's not that they skip the steps, it's that they give conflicting steps by also copy-pasting the monero build directions which won't work because some targets fail. Also they tell you to set up the daemon which you don't need.

Also if you want to make a lot of ordinals really fast, fund the ordinals wallet a bunch of small enotes (many small payments) with a single multi-output payment.

>> No.54192650

>>54192074
Lastly, I'll add that their block explorer accepts webp, png, gif, jpg as the image, and any plaintext as the metadata (txt, html, cpp, etc.)

I don't know what their max file size is, but I think it is around 100KiB. I reccomend using webp because it usually has the best compression for lossless and lossy, and it also does aninations like gif. you can use gimp to export the images or gif animations as webp or whatever. Use the quality slider. It would be nice if we could all go easy on the network and keep the ordinals around 10KiB though...
also gif can save a couple bytes ln really tiny images, so maybe compare different formats for filesize.

geez feds, even russian haxors with 2 digit iqs are smart enough to avoid zcash. zcash is a cancer, it's closed source, it's private until gov knocks their doors and they already did. kys if you think zcash is better than monero in any way. price-wise monero is cash. I don't except my cash to bring me 10000000x in a year, like cash it's kinda inflationary but you don't keep xmr for gains, you keep it to spend it.
