54108786 No.54108786 [Reply] [Original]

It's been sitting there for over a year now. I decided that I want to buy Treasury Bills instead of having my money eaten away from inflation.

Which t-bills would you recommend? 4-week or 3-month? And how would you suggest structuring the ladder schedule? Anyone else in the same boat? Thanks for the advice /biz/

I don't really qualify for a loan (don't have 2 years worth of consistent income for one) and I want to stay liquid. Realestate isn't liquid at all, which is why I want to stick with short-term t-bills.

wrong. you want a 3- or 6-month CD at best. rates will not stay where they are today, but volatility is up. they will go higher if powell thinks he can get away with it and they will go lower if dimon or fink tells him otherwise.

Newfag to bonds

Same thing as OP, I have 150k in assets I need to keep liquid in connection with my father's estate, want to get 6 month treasury bonds. How does somebody buy bonds? Post office?

>> No.54110755

>>54110661
Treasury bonds are sold at a bank. They’ll try to sell you mutual funds instead.

will ask here because why not. I am a literal finance retard, I have never filled out a tax report so keep that in mind. I have around 70k€ in savings just sitting in my bank account. My bank offers me 3,66% in "saving bonds", dont know how that shit is called in other languages. They basically get my money (planning with 60k) for 6years and I receive like 13k back with a monthly payment. the money is insured up to 100k and this seems better than just letting it rot on my bank account. I dont believe in crypto btw.

Buy 4 week bills and put 50 thousand in each week. If it's $150k you don't plan on using at all, it really doesn't matter if you ladder it or not. Don't forget you can only buy 4 week bills on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

>> No.54111123

>>54110661

You can buy them through a brokerage account, or directly from TreasuryDirect.gov. if you need $150k liquid, just get into a money market fund (government class), or ladder 4 week t bills.

They're offering you what's called a CD in the United States. https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/certificateofdeposit.asp

I don't live in Europe, but I've never heard of a monthly payment plan from a loan you've made to the bank.

>> No.54111371

You buy treasuries through an account at TreasuryDirect.gov and you should probably google how to buy at over trusting anything on this dead piece of shit board but just remember that a lot of short term yields are roughly comparable to what you would get in a high yield savings account

Either do a CD or a high yield savings account. My discover is 3.5% savings account. They have CDS at like 4%+. If you really want it liquid the savings account the money isn't tied up for any length of time.

Nah, you should be fine. It's better than getting nothing in your account. Make sure it's covered by some sort of insurance. In the USA we have FDIC.

The banks competitively bid for treasuries. As a retail investor you basically just ride in behind them, but you get the same rate.

Irrelevant. Euro will into crisis when Italy, Spain and Greece can't keep up with debt payments. They can't take the rising rates much longer. Fuck the Euro. Invest into the SP500 in Dollars. Or buy Gold/Agricultural land/Real estate. Whatever you do get out of the Euro now.
