Prior to 2016, I was working as a data analyst in the healthcare industry. Since that time I have been moving frequently due to my wife's job, and have been spending my time trading in the financial markets for my own accounts. I have had my ups and downs doing this, but recently have come to the conclusion that I have to return to the workforce, as trading is not a predictable enough income.Obviously, my big concern is that I am nearly 40 years old and have a giant 7 year hole in my resume....the optics of this are pretty bad and embarrassing. I am open to temporary assignments, contract work, remote work from home stuff....basically anything to get my foot back in the door of the workforce, as long as it is something where my previous experience will have some benefit to me (4-year degree in finance, lots of excel experience, financial modeling, budget management, SQL, forecast modeling, etc). I live near Norfolk, VA....lots of gov't/military/defense industry stuff down here, not much else.

Just curious what you would do in my situation. Thanks for all responses.

>data analyst
>healthcare
You can do a lot as long as you brush up on new software, or even throw together a shitty pamphlet on how you used your software, metrics, or analytics stuff.
If you can show any sort of competence, you'll be alright. And since you're 40, you will have higher chances of actually getting a good job because everything is fucked and employers don't care about people 35 and under.
>government / millitary defense stuff
Not worth all the bullshit and hoops you have to jump through just to get a clearance. Absolutely not worth it. The clientelle are all assholes, like all ex-millitary people that settle for an office job because of all their injuries from time spent in the army.
The moment you confront them about anything, they WILL resort to "I don't care about your opinion! I don't need this job! I have millitary retirement! :)"
Stay the fuck away from civillian military jobs.

say that you were a financial engineer or some shit, running your own fund. it sounds more pompous than saying you were just trading, and in actuality if you're serious about getting income through trading you're going to be doing a lot of complex stuff involving programming languages, data modelling, storage, and so on. but you should know all of that you're twice my age.

if you have some code and I assume that you do, make it look a bit nicer, hide the "proprietary" parts that you don't want public and put it on a github account. then when you're applying to jobs you'll flex about what a smart data analyst you are. also tell them that you can't reveal the more juicy stuff as it's your very own special secret proprietary method to woo the hiring comitee

Say that you were either an independent consultant, that you were working for startups that no longer exist, or that you were working for companies that went under. Something that they can't really call you out on for being false.

I'm here for this thread, absolutely on the same boat. I'm learning python as we speak, just taking a quick 30 minute break so I'm here. I spent the last few years selling used cars however, not a fancy thing to put on a resume.

No they’re not. Focus on the positive. You wanted to be supportive of your wife’s career (shows you’re a team player and a feminist, HR bitches will love that), you spent your analytic skills for your own accounts (shows you broadened your abilities and kept your chops up), you also used the time for personal enrichment to enjoy life (shows your battery is recharged, you’re fresh and ready to work), kept up on analytic and healthcare developments (shows you’re not a dinosaur). Interview like you were a young college kid full of enthusiasm coupled with the wisdom of experience. They only pitfall is they’ll wonder if your wife will uproot you again.

why are the optics bad? just say youe been making a living off investments and market speculation the past 7 years but now you are bored and want to work on a team again. it makes you look smart. ive never understood faggots who cant get jobs. i got my last job after being NEET for 5 years and it was my first interview. i literally just walked in and asked to speak with the manager and told thm why i would add value to the company.

You were a data analyst, and then a trader, I'm sure you can leverage that and explain how you applied your knowledge to be successful at it. You were good enough to go at it on your own, so make light of it, but don't boast too hard obviously.
Also this >>54097064 do some little project of your own that you can show, it displays initiative on your part and that you still have the skills from your past job even if it was years ago

Theres businesses that will give you fake references, put up a fake website for a fake job that you can claim you had. Its a few hundred bucks last time I checked and unsure how professional they are but I'm considering it. I'm in a similar situation but I did freelancing coding for a few years then stopped from the crypto boom. There are interview books that list basically every question you could possibly be asked. I'm working on a document now that contains all my lies. It's a ton of work to fabricate an entire work experience, fake conflicts, successes, failures, annoyances, what my daily routine was, how my position changed over time etc. But I have a lot of time.

Also I realized the secret trick the other day. Theres alot of fear and anxiety over lying about something like this. But the source of this is this imaginary scenario where you're busted and the vice principal busts in and grabs you by your ear and walks you to his office where you're going to be in so much trouble!! But this is silly. Infact the best way to deal with getting caught is to deny it. It's the Trump move, its a power move, never fucking budge an inch that you are 100% honest and who knows why HR was suspicious. If they try to escalate get angry and threaten to sue them. Fuck them. They're trying to exploit you anyway, they're not doing you a fucking favor by extracting your lifeforce for a wage.

Good luck, fren.

yeah better not mention your wife moving a lot. maybe say that you're there to retire, raise kids and dogs and some thing like that, they love that shit. on the flip side they might negociate harder on the salary side

Does the US have some government online tax portal? Because that's how "references" work in the UK nowadays, at the interview they will just give you a computer so you can login to the tax portal and it shows your employment history fml

last I checked all we had was background checks and the HR deportment will contact your previous employers and references. They can ask for copies of tax forms but that's more common with high level corporate jobs where you're managing funds and are a potential risk. I wouldn't be shocked if the US has something similar in the works but I think we're more cautious of centralized systems like you describe. I remember hearing once that in finland or sweden you can literally look up exactly how much everyone earns, it's all public. I can't imagine what thats like for the failures of society, knowing their ex girlfriends are laughing at their salaries while getting fucked by chad.

You weren't doing nothing for the past 7 years, add your money management experience to your resume.

Get a friend/connection to get you back into the workforce. Once you have a few years under your belt, make a move to something better. I don't think you really have a shortcut. There is plenty of need for warm bodies in defense, especially since we're headed towards WW3. Most financial related defense jobs do not require clearances.
