While failure to manage duration risk was part of it, I honestly think the key factor was Twitter/social media herd mentality.
Think of all the random one-off consumer staple runs that happened during COVID. Now take an area with the people most likely to still be that level of panicked, add some crypto failures the weeks before, and you get a population of people conditioned to stampede at the slightest drop of potential bad news. And well, disclosing that you have billions of losses from going all-in on long term bonds right before the steepest rape hikes in history is what one might call, "bad news".

Piss poor investment strategies and terrible risk management. They bought a bunch of bonds, more so than other bank, which were mostly mortgage-backed securities and govt. bonds. Once interest rates started rising, because hello they can't stay zero forever, they stared taking on massive losses.

So then they decide, "oh shit we neeeed money, cut the bond bags!" So they sell $21 billion worth at an enormous loss lol.
And now everyone wants to cry, "This is the FEDs fault for 0% interest rates, pls gib tax moneys to cover our losses now!" When the reality is you made a terrible investment, period, end of story.

None of them are ACTUALLY to big to fail. But if you need to know JP Morgan is the Boss Nigger of banks. When people say 08 bail out what they really mean is JP Morgan bough out all the failing banks. Funny enough one of the main reasons the FED was even created was due to the Panic of 1907 which JP Morgan himself bailed out the banks.

Here is another one from a previous banking crisis.
>When the chaos began to shake the confidence of New York's banks, the city's most famous banker was out of town. J. P. Morgan, the eponymous president of J.P. Morgan & Co., was attending a church convention in Richmond, Virginia. Morgan was not only the city's wealthiest and most well-connected banker, but he had experience with other similar financial crises—he had helped rescue the U.S. Treasury during the Panic of 1893.

The pain will continue until JP Morgan says there has been enough pain.

Nikola Tesla's Wardenclyffe station: 1900

In 1900, the inventor Nikola Tesla convinced Morgan he could build a trans-Atlantic wireless communication system based on his theories of Earth and atmospheric electrical conduction (eventually sited at Wardenclyffe) that would outperform the short range radio wave-based wireless telegraph system then being demonstrated by Guglielmo Marconi. In what may have been a philanthropic investment,[37] Morgan gave Tesla $150,000 (equivalent to $4,885,800 in 2021) to build the system and Tesla offered him a 51% control of the patents. Almost as soon as the letter of agreement was signed Tesla decided to scale up the facility to include his ideas of terrestrial wireless power transmission to make what he thought was a more competitive system.[38] Morgan refused to give Tesla any further money towards the project and, with Tesla unable to secure further investment capital, Wardenclyffe's development stalled and the site was abandoned by 1906.[38][39]
>Cockblocks Tesla and denies free energy for all

Morgan was scheduled to travel on the ill-fated maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic, which was owned by an IMMC subsidiary, White Star Line. Morgan was to have his own private suite and promenade deck on the ship. He canceled at the last minute, choosing to remain at a resort in Aix-les-Bains, France.[47] The ship's famous sinking was a financial disaster for IMMC. Analysis of financial records shows that IMMC was over-leveraged and suffered from inadequate cash flow causing it to default on bond interest payments.[b][48][49]

In response to the sinking, Morgan purportedly said:

Monetary losses amount to nothing in life. It is the loss of life that counts. It is that frightful death.[50]

The Friday before Washington mutual failed and was bought by jpm. They told everyone they were safe and liquid, Sunday night they announce jpm has merged (bought) them… tomorrow is gonna be fun. Does congress bail them out? If no a larger bank has to buy them. Svb is in this because of shit timed short term treasury bonds that don’t equal deposits. Because of 08 I am reluctant to think congress will be willing to bail them out but it is most likely. Second option is a merger into a larger bank like jpm or Morgan or gs BUT BUT BUT those institutions literally have the exact same deposit rate AND shit yield short term treasuries + interest rate hikes, make a merger of this size seem like an absolute net loss except controlling the contagion.

You know what he deserves to have his company rule American after reading his wiki bio.
>Starting in early January 1859, Morgan spent several months in the South to visit the firm's correspondents in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana and to improve his knowledge of the (slave)cotton trade. He briefly visited Cuba, where he developed a lifelong taste for Cuban cigars.
> Morgan avoided serving during the war by paying a substitute $300 to take his place.
>Morgan also profited in gold after specie payments were suspended in 1862; its price was largely pegged to the possibility of a Union victory. In October 1863, he and Edward B. Ketchum transferred $1.15 million in gold to England, forcing a price spike and allowing both men to sell their holdings at a large profit. Critics have long considered the deal a speculative effort to corner the American gold market and evidence of Morgan's insensitivity to the nation's financial situation
>From 1864 to 1872, he was a member of the firm of Dabney, Morgan, & Co. In 1869, He wrested control of the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad from Jay Gould and Jim Fisk.
>Morgan came up with a plan to use an old civil war statute that allowed Morgan and the Rothschilds to sell 3.5 million ounces of gold directly to the U.S. Treasury in exchange for a 30-year bond issue. The episode saved the Treasury but hurt Cleveland's standing with the populist agrarian wing of the Democratic Party, ensuring his political career was over.
>Morgan often had a tremendous physical effect on people; one man said that a visit from Morgan left him feeling "as if a gale had blown through the house." He was physically large with massive shoulders, piercing eyes, and a purple nose. He was known to dislike publicity and hated being photographed without his permission
>When he died Flags on Wall Street flew at half-staff, and in an honor usually reserved for heads of state, the stock market closed for two hours when his body passed through New York City.

When I went to london in 2017, I spent every day walking around the place trying to look for even ONE (1) white person. In a week I only found 2 brits in total (a boomer couple). Every single shop is owned by indians or muslims. A pack of feral muslim kids tried to steal my phone in broad daylight in a kind of ploy I've only seen in movies featuring poor neighborhoods in middle eastern countries. The handful of other white people I saw didn't speak English (a lot spoke spanish), and were obviously tourists.
This made me completely reevaluate what I thought about the globohomo shows coming from the UK, I suddenly understand where they were coming from. They actually really aren't just pushing trannyggers, it's their actual, genuine, current-day demographic.

When you look at % unrealized loss in terms of liquidity it’s kind of irrelevant. You need to look at their market value of level 1 securities (any other investments get a haircut) and see if it can cover a good amount od their deposits. This also doesn’t take into account their FHLB borrowing capacity. I think first republic had 60b in untapped capacity. This doesn’t even take into account lender of last resort discount window activity. Selling securities would be the very last option to raise cash.

Twitter spaces was pretty lit today. It's been a ten hour conversation with the who's who of venture capital. We even had Mark Cuban and Bill Ackman hop on to answer a few questions. Pretty interesting stuff.

Simplest, most robust way is to look at the spearman correlation between the diffed log price history. There are more advanced methods like dynamic time warping though.

You need to make sure to control for the false discovery rate, because it's easy to find spurious correlations in series data.

The bottom of March 2020 was after the Fed slashed interest rates to 0% and pledged infinite QE. They probably won't do that this time.

I do feel like it'll eventually blow over in a few months tho

>waits way too long to raise rates despite smart people screaming at them to do so
People were also screaming at them to keep rates low. Politicians were still locking down, and raising rates earlier would've interfered with reopening and rebuilding supply chains. The only solution would be ending lockdowns earlier, but that would make you a Trump supporting science denier.
>raises rates way too fast and unpredictably
Those were the most predictable hikes in the fed's history and they were being screamed at by lots of people who wanted faster hikes.
>refuses to give a plan so markets and banks can prepare for the future, aka "we are not proactive we are reactive"
They gave a plan. Do you want them to decide everything a year in advance so they'll be stuck going off a cliff with year-old outdated data long after the situation has changed? Markets were explicitly fighting the fed and denying that the fed would do the few things it did say, so even if the fed locked itself into a plan like retards, the market would still bet on them changing it.
>obvious signs things are starting to crack
All the retards were insisting new bull market, strong economy, banks safe, new all time highs soon right up until Thursday. Even suggesting that there were signs was considered doomer fantasizing.
>Fed has the balls to say they will increase rate or rate increases again to 50
After everyone was screaming at them for being pussies and allowing hyperinflation after they turned dovish and slowed down to 25bps.
>bank collapses
>bank runs begin
Mumu is still denying this and insisting nothing will happen. The hamburger will predict new all time highs while it's being served on a bun.
