noone short term probably except for overleveraged banks in securities. They had 150 bil of equities on the balance sheet which are presumably going to be liquidated so there will be selling pressure. Other banks that did a similar thing would likely get the same treatment but the ripples in the broader economy could be serious. You never know until it happens.
One thing that is obvious is this is the first more major event to occur and very likely not the last of this overleveraged cluster cunt fuck of an economy. The only way to get back to normality is to pop the imaginary wealth bubble. Bring the pain.

Yes depositors:
If you deposited over 250 000$, read the article in the stickied as it has a phone number you can call if you had more than 250 000$ deposited.
If you own stocks then there is a separate matter involving bankruptcy matters, where you will get some money back - but I am not very familiar with How that works.

QRD: SVB was trying to make ends meet by using mortgage rates they were only making 1.5% on. Yellen decided she was going to raise rates so treasury yields are higher. THUS, we have this collapse. Not only did they do low rate mortgages, they also do silicon valley startups and VC funding. Anyway, The fed came in yesterday and tried to find a fucking buyer for these 1:20 leveraged fucks and couldn't. Now we are here with the 2nd largest bankruptcy in the world.

depends on your positions. this is bad for tech meme shit and other meme banks like svb but shouldn't really touch value or solid banks much. you obviously never know for sure with unintuitive ripple effects (e.g. svb -> tech meme shit -> nonbank financials), but cash in normal banks should be pretty fucking safe.

I think this thread will have tons of views from people in the startup world that are likely to be SVB customers. If we all agree to not do run in the bank, it will improve chances for SVB to make it through the next few days.
I'll start with committing not to withdraw money my company [redacted] holds in the bank.

We stand by SVB.

I invite others to do the same.

I just walked over to my local bank and it says I can't withdraw on the ATM, and the bank teller told me they can't because of "technical issues", i went over to a different branch and asked to deposit 100 (as a shit test) and they said no problem. I switched half way through the conversation and said "oh i slipped up i really wanted to withdraw 100" and the teller kinda fumbled and look at their coworkers and said "I can't, its glitched" and i just said if you can take deposits how come you can't take withdraws, and they just made up some "i don't know" bullshit lie

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-03-10/startup-bank-had-a-startup-bank-run

Levine's take is pretty good. And he's funny.

Basically, most banks hold your money and lend some of it out to people who buy homes and shit.

SIVB holds the money of dumb startups. And lends it out to... well, pretty much nobody, because if you're running a startup you don't need much debt. So they invest that money in government bonds which is to say they loan it to the government. The government will absolutely make good on that promise to pay the interest on the bonds. The problem is that interest rates went up, and nobody wants old bonds that yield 0-1% when they can get 4-5% today.

This is fine if you're a bank and most of your clients just keep some money with you. This is not fine if you're a bank whose clients (techbros) start withdrawing their money. This is very not fine if you're a bank whose techbro clients are prone to flipping out and pulling all their money out within 24 hours of each other.

Anyone with deposits in the bank under $250K will be fine on Monday morning. Anyone (i.e., some techbro companies) over that limit will have to wait a bit. That could fuck up some tech companies, but it's likely that everybody, even the tech companies, gets made whole.

Levine points out that whoever winds up taking over the bank from the Feds is buying the leftover business that was once SVB. That business is worth the brand name (which ain't shit) and whatever actual business SVB did (which is only worth anything if every one of their clients gets back 100% of the money they had on deposit).

It's a shitshow and it could still go wrong, but I don't think this is 2008 all over again. But it is funny as shit. And if it all goes wrong, it will still be funny as shit, albeit for a different reason.

Mortgages and treasuries both pay out as a given interest rate. Banks typically sell these things before they mature if they need more cash. The resale value of these mortgage backed securities and treasury bonds tanked because new mortgage backed securities and treasury bonds will pay out at a 5x higher interest rate.

>> No.54025731 [DELETED]

>we'd better start selling our mortgages while they are still worth something
they *bought* shit tons of mortgages (like 80b$) during 2021. it's not just that they held onto their existing ones.
part of the reason is the retarded tech boom of 2020-2021. lots of cash in tech => lots of new deposits => shit timing for a techbro bank that suddenly has to generate tons of yield for like a 150% increase in deposits
their position wasn't great from the get-go and their industry fucked them. they just shouldn't have grown that much during 2021. not sure if they could've generated the needed yield by other means.

I'm Coyote Peterson, and this... is calling the janny a nigger.

I'm here on the boards of /biz/ at 4channel.org, where a vicious beast called "the janitor" lurks in the shadows. His diet consists of hot pockets, and he spends most of his time jerking off to blacked on his anime body pillow which is why he leaves cuck threads up. But with a little dedication, I think we can lure him out, to see his fabled sting. Also known as a "ban", the janitor's sting can hurt for up to 3 days on average, but in rare cases, have had residual effects for a lifetime. Oh... I think I see one. Yeah that's it. Over there in his mom's basement. Do you see it? Oh wow, what a big fella. Look at the fat rolls on his abdomen. While most would call him disgusting, you have to admire mother nature and what she's created here. Alright now that the janitor is here, we'll bait him into giving us his dreadful sting.

Kids, don't try this at home.

Janny... you're a nigger.

It has been a bubble for a while now. California in particular has needed one for a while. The problem (this is more CA specific) is the housing shortage on top of that. It doesn't really make sense to have a crash when housing is in such high demand. I'm not particularly smart so I don't know what exactly that looks like.

You underestimate American's economic power if you think that.
Tech companies and PoT (people of tech) may suffer a bit in the short term, but the rest of the financial industry will take up the pieces quickly enough. No company will fail because of this.

Okay.
>So this bank was responsible for nearly half of all Tech start ups lending
>47% of all Biomedical IPOs
This isn't the issue yet we are unraveling that.

See American had been running on "free money" for the last 13 year you wanted money from bank at low interest you got it easy. Then 2020 happened and we printed A LOT of money to make super free money, PCP loans, and bail outs to survive the shut downs.

Suddenly the Federal Reserve realizing very late there is an inflation spiral begins raising rates fast. Fastest rate hikes since the 80s when the rates hit 20%. The intent is to slow down lending which slows inflation.

Why does this matter because it meant banks can't get free money. If they need to borrow money then the bank needs to pay with interest and this hurts the banks. SVB was handing out a lot of risky loans and well when the Tech Start Ups failed the loans stopped being repayed. Causing SVB to take on debt to sustain itself.

Now why is this a big deal well SVB was the 15th I think largest bank in the US on top of that several companies banked with them meaning when the bank failed those multi million dollar accounts turned into .25 million dollar pity checks. Finally when a bank fails it stresses the banks that lended to keep them a float sort of working through the banking system like a virus actually called a contagion.

But now the fun part see SVB had across the board A ratings meaning the entire system used to rate the banks safety, your moneys safety is under scrutiny sending panic and becoming the catalyst for bank runs which could break other banks as they DO NOT have your money on hand. Also there have already been video of people getting arrested for wanting their money.

Have some /tv/ kino explaining what happens.

Oh boy.

The current FED is trying to limit money printing and has rose rates at a speed not seen since the 80s. This is a repercussion of the money printing this same FED did. The issue is raising rates hurts banks, which in turn hurts business, which hurts consumer spending which lowers inflation.

See this man. Jews fear this man more then Hitler because he did something they still wet themselves over. It's time you learned about the 80's and the Volcker shock.

maybe. It's the crisis of confidence which sets things off. With this bank gone, other banks are now rethinking their risk; and if there are any mutual clients who relied on debt to stay afloat; they'll find themselves getting capital calls from multiple banks at once. Meanwhile; this will also freeze up credit lines between banks; which caused a whole new world of problem in 2008

>>54027745
No, it's more like... the fed is trying to get his friend of cocaine, and the friend keeps saying "if I can't have more I'll die"

>>54027513
the bigger problem is that the artificially low rates have prevented the nation from making up the money borrowed during the last crash. So instead of a bazooka in his pocket; they've got nothing.

>>54027500

Loans to tech start ups?
>Approximately 90% of startups will fail.
Very risky. Basically if I did a Tech Start Up took out a loan blew the money on dumb shit like diversity hires, advertising, and paying myself and I declare bankruptcy on the Start Up while making 0 or worse negative profit (basically taking out more loans to keep the company afloat... this happened A LOT) then the bank is at a lose on the loan meaning the bank lost the money people who deposit their money into the bank gave them. Now USUALLY this is not a problem because the bank can take a loan from another bank to cover themselves. The issue is SVB failed meaning they couldn't pay back the money they borrowed and they couldn't pay back the people who deposit money. This is where the problem begins because for you and me who probably don't keep all their wealth or have enough wealth to worry about this is annoying but we won't get hurt since FDIC covers the cost... the issue is all accounts over the $250,000 coverage are fucked beyond belief.

Say you have 1 million you only get 25% of your money.
Say you have 10 million you will only recoup 2.5% of your account.
Say you have 100 million you will only get .25% of the total account back.

So it is a real fucking problem when payrolls and multi million dollar companies have their funds evaporate with no idea if they will ever get them back. And the only way to get them back is more loans from banks to other banks.

A shit ton of funded companies use SVB as their only bank account. They were known as a mainstay, and a pretty conservative bank, actually. They took on too many deposits in last 3 years and didn't manage risk.

Now, a ton of small companies can't run payroll and will vaporize in the next month. Employees maybe can hold out 1 or 2 paychecks, but that's gonna be it. Going to be a glut of people on the market very soon.

Make sure your gains aren't in fiat or digital currency I recommend land guns ammo and canned goods if this goes full send which is the plan (usher in New digital currency 24/7 tracking and real time remote asset seizure) money won't mean much. Land food and means of defense will be top investments bullets will be easier tools of trade than money. That's probably a big far out though in the meanwhile I would start shorting and hope the gains outpace the inflation and there is a bank to hold them that is trustworthy personally I wouldn't trust any aspect of the financial system this is just the beginning China has plans and the new currency brics nations are rolling out is backed by oil and gold rather than e-iou's

If they even had cash. I'm sure a good percent of them have no cash, and are/were operating off the debt they were being provided by SVB.

So... you have the rich people and banker types putting in money to invest in the startups; and the startups sucking the money out on their new products.

Both will lose, but in different waves. For those startups not making profit already; they lose their operating capital pretty quick. For those who invested money; they will probably lose all; unless the money was isolated in some way.

At the same time, all of the startups left out in the cold will be looking for new debt issuers; with a bunch of startups flooding the market looking for money people probably won't want to loan.

The Federal Reserve will stop raising rates now that they realize the economy is more fragile than they thought.
They just popped the tech bubble and an entire bank, the second largest bank collapse in US history. JPow will realize that he has to stop double-jumping up the mountain and assess the terrain.
As a result, inflation will continue. Prices are going to get worse. Yes, most price inflation today is due to supply-side constraints, but the Fed was at least able to do something about consumer demand by raising rates.

This will affect the world economy because the Russo-Ukrainian War in ongoing, the pero dollar still exists, and the USD is still the world reserve currency. I'm sorry, but did SVB already lose? Oh, that's right. The trimester isn't even over yet. In fact, it's only march. Does not having liquidity in march count as a loss? Is that what you're saying? Because if you're saying that I can assure you that you're wrong. Why would you make this topic when the money printer is still on? SVB is being insured right now and they have been the best lenders in the tech industry for how many years now? They're lending to some of the dumbest companies in silicon valley who just happened to do a bank run because they're feeding off the energy of a market panic in a friday Night. But you know what? Their hands are fucking weak. The SVB is one of the best fucking banks in the USA, they got 487mil from roku last year and would of raised enough capital if deposit holders didn't choke. Maybe you should shut the fuck up before you make retarded topics like this. You know why? Because you're going to be embarrassed when SVB gets bailed and someone bumps this topic. Oh look at that, the FDIC shut SVB down just when they needed a distraction to the debt ceiling issue, just like Obama did. Are you a fucking drunk? Are you retarded? Are you autistic? You are a fucking idiot and you should never make a topic on this board again and I'm fucking serious. I almost have a feeling you're the only guy making all these anti-SVB topics because you're a faggot hater who doesn't like the team because they're good. Fuck you, be good at something in YOUR life and then maybe try to troll these fucking banks on the board, like I give a fuck. It's so easy to spot out your threads now, you're a retard. Always doing stupid shit like this. Why don't you try to be a good poster? Just for once? For once in your fucking life try not to make a topic like this. That's just you, you're always right at getting it wrong.

Pittsburgh solved the rust belt's offshoring problem by investing heavily in education. They are now the center of precision manufacturing and robotics in the US.

Houston is the largest city close to Mexico. They can do precision engineering of machine parts and send them to Mexico to be cheaply assembled.

He's not going to stop raising rates just because something broke in the economy. This was planned for and intended, and inflation still has a long way to go before its tamed. That being said, we will probably get a 25 bps hike this month instead of the initially forecasted 50 bps, but with the soft landing fallacy off the table now, it wont be the bullish indicator you think it will. We are past the point now of just simply waiting for a pivot.

Also, demographics. Boomers are aging into retirement, taking their capital with them. Gen X, the smallest generation in recent history, is now of the age where they're investing for retirement and they don't have nearly as much aggregate capital as the boomers did at that age. Capital and thus VC is more expensive now than it was 10 years ago. Add that to the fed hikes and yeah. Live by the bubble, die by the bubble. Be it crypto, tech, whatever. Used cars is most likely the next bubble to pop. New cars after that. Lot of sub-prime defaults about to happen in automobile financing.

If that were true, it would definitely be concerning and we'd be looking at a pretty wild cataclysm in the event of a financial collapse. However, I don't think this is a financial collapse. I think this is going to be a recession contained only to high-risk capital-dependant industries like tech and biotech. It started with crypto and it's moving down the chain. Watch the automotive market next, and then the real estate market.

Junk bonds might not be the best way to put it, but think of it like this. They had all that money in bonds, which guarantees a certain percentage payout when it matures. Bond rates have gone up significantly since svb bought theirs. So think about it, why would anyone buy your bonds that are only paying out 2% when you can get one at 5%? Essentially too-big-to-fail mentality & quantitative easing mean absolute idiots get billions upon billions of dollars to spend with no accountability or consequences. They simply retire to their mansions after leaving treasury and society at large holding the flaming disaster. 'Not my problem'. They leeched all the money they needed long ago anyways.

The specifics is that they went in on billions in government bonds at a 1.6 interest rate and then found nobody would buy them once the government issued new bonds at far higher and more valuable interest rates. Their only option was to sell them for pennies on the dollar and become bankrupt.

When you buy a bond at a low interest rate and interest rates go up, that equates to losing money due to the market value of the bond dropping.
In reality the implication arrow works the other way around, the effective yield of a bond is computed from its price. Price is determined at the midpoint of buyers and sellers.
To simplify it, they effectively put a ton of money into 3-4 year debt at, say, $95 and they'd get $100 per note back in 3-4 years. Now the notes are only worth $80 each due to the money printer turning off and their effective rate on the debt market is higher. For 2 years the Fed was printing money to buy up bonds and keep interest rates low. That ended.
They are made whole if they hold the notes to maturity, but they needed cash today. So it's tech bro holocaust now.

Looking at these two, it's almost as though SVB is going to play the "AIG" role this time.

2008 Crash:
> everyone took wild bets, over-leveraged, and took/made bad loans and deals
> they did it because they had insurance, which protected them from loss
> winds up everyone had insurance through the same company, AIG
> when things went south, AIG quickly went insolvent, which meant that everyone who had sold their risk to AIG were now back on the hook for every shitty loan they conned someone into taking.

As it's starting to look here...
> so-called stable coins seen as a "safe" shelter to pause while trading shitcoin
> everyone uses stable-coin as their digital store of wealth
> the coin itself is mostly derivative, with the value held by constantly changing/moving bundles of all of the coins in the crypto market
> everyone buys it because SOMEONE has to have the real money somewhere.
> now we find that the place that had it went poof

I'm not enough of a crypto person to know how it's all set up, but there are situations where it's impossible for the stable coin algorithm to keep up; where it winds up buying increasingly worthless assets until there is no more money.

It also probably screws with trader algorithms; which foolishly assumed that there was such thing as a legitimately stable digital coin.

So, to make a very simplified example to see if I'm understanding this correctly.
A) Bank buys fuck ton of bonds with the goal of getting $1.05 for every dollar spent in 10 years.
B) Interest rate goes up, now new bonds are guaranteeing $1.10 for every dollar spent in 10 years
C) Bank is forced to sell its guaranteed $1.05 for 50 cents because the new bonds give a slightly higher return.
I guess my question is, why would it be such a sharp drop? Sure I could see it selling for maybe 5-10% less, but why the hell would it be 50% loss if the guaranteed $1.05 is still there?

1/10 SVB

The lesson might be that there are some industries that are bad to bank. Imagine that it was 2021, and someone was like “do you want to start the Bank of Crypto? What about the Bank of Venture-Backed Tech Startups?” You’d be tempted, right? Those industries had so much money! They seemed cool. If you were their bank — if you were the specialized bank that exclusively focused on those industries — influencers on Twitter would tweet nice things about you, and you’d get invited to fancy parties. Also, as their bank, you’d probably find a way to get a cut of growing industries with lots of potential. Provide banking services to tech startups, get warrants in those startups, get rich when they go public. Provide banking services to crypto exchanges, start some sort of blockchain-based payment network, get rich through the magic of saying “blockchain” a lot.

But the structure of being the Bank of Crypto or Startups was a bit rickety. Traditionally, the way a bank works is that it takes deposits from people who have money, and makes loans to people who need money. The weird problem with focusing exclusively on crypto or startups in 2021 is that they had too much money. If you were the Bank of Startups, the main service that you provided to startups is that equity investors would give them a truck full of cash and they’d deposit it at your bank. Here is how SVB Financial Group, the holding company of Silicon Valley Bank, describes the vibe of 2021 and 2022 in its Form 10-K two weeks ago:

>Much of the recent deposit growth was driven by our clients across all segments obtaining liquidity through liquidity events, such as IPOs, secondary offerings, SPAC fundraising, venture capital investments, acquisitions and other fundraising activities—which during 2021 and early 2022 were at notably high levels.

People kept flinging money at SVB’s customers, and they kept depositing it at SVB. Perfectly reasonable banking service

>> No.54032915

>>54032907

But the customers didn’t need loans, in part because equity investors kept giving them trucks full of cash and in part because young tech startups tend not to have the fixed assets or recurring cash flows that make for good corporate borrowers. [1] Oh, there is some tech-industry-adjacent lending you can do. [2] Tech founders want to buy houses, and you can give them mortgages. Venture capital and private equity funds want to manage liquidity and/or juice their reported return rates by paying for investments with borrowed money rather than drawing from their limited partners, so you can get into the capital-call-line-of-credit business. There are vineyards near Silicon Valley and you can develop an expertise in vineyard financing. And, sure, some of your tech-company customers do need to borrow money, and are creditworthy, and you lend them money and that works out. But there is a basic imbalance. Customer money keeps coming in, as deposits, but it doesn’t go out, as loans.

So you have all this customer cash, and you need to do something with it. Keeping it in, like, Fed reserves, or Treasury bills, in 2021, was not a great choice; that stuff paid basically no interest, and you want to make money. So you’d buy longer-dated, but also very safe, securities, things like Treasury bonds and agency mortgage-backed securities. We talked yesterday about how this worked out at Silvergate Capital Corp., the actual Bank of Crypto. And as of the end of 2022, Silicon Valley Bank, the actual Bank of Startups, had about $74 billion of loans and about $120 billion of investment securities.

Crudely stereotyping, in traditional banking, you take deposits and make loans. In the Bank of Startups, in 2021, you take deposits and mostly buy bonds. Again crudely stereotyping, corporate loans often have floating interest rates and shorter terms, while bonds have fixed interest rates and longer terms. None of this is completely true — there are fixed-rate corporate loans and floating-rate bonds, traditional banking tends to involve making lots of loans (like mortgages) with long-term fixed rates, you can do swaps, etc. — but it is a useful crude stereotype. [3]

Or, to put it in different crude terms, in traditional banking, you make your money in part by taking credit risk: You get to know your customers, you try to get good at knowing which of them will be able to pay back loans, and then you make loans to those good customers. In the Bank of Startups, in 2021, you couldn’t really make money by taking credit risk: Your customers just didn’t need enough credit to give you the credit risk that you needed to make money on all those deposits. So you had to make your money by taking interest-rate risk: Instead of making loans to risky corporate borrowers, you bought long-term bonds backed by the US government.

The result of this is that, as the Bank of Startups, you were unusually exposed to interest-rate risk. Most banks, when interest rates go up, have to pay more interest on deposits, but get paid more interest on their loans, and end up profiting from rising interest rates. But you, as the Bank of Startups, own a lot of long-duration bonds, and their market value goes down as rates go up. Every bank has some mix of this — every bank borrows short to lend long; that’s what banking is — but many banks end up a bit more balanced than the Bank of Startups. At the Financial Times, Robert Armstrong writes:

>Few other banks have as much of their assets locked up in fixed-rate securities as SVB, rather than in floating-rate loans. Securities are 56 per cent of SVB’s assets. At Fifth Third, the figure is 25 per cent; at Bank of America, it is 28 per cent.

>For most banks higher rates, in and of themselves, are good news. They help the asset side of the balance sheet more than they hurt the liability side. … SVB is the opposite: higher rates hurt it on the liability side more than they help it on the asset side. As Oppenheimer bank analyst Chris Kotowski sums up, SVB is “a liability-sensitive outlier in a generally asset-sensitive world”.

But there is another, subtler, more dangerous exposure to interest rates: You are the Bank of Startups, and startups are a low-interest-rate phenomenon. When interest rates are low everywhere, a dollar in 20 years is about as good as a dollar today, so a startup whose business model is “we will lose money for a decade building artificial intelligence, and then rake in lots of money in the far future” sounds pretty good. When interest rates are higher, a dollar today is better than a dollar tomorrow, so investors want cash flows. When interest rates were low for a long time, and suddenly become high, all the money that was rushing to your customers is suddenly cut off. Your clients who were “obtaining liquidity through liquidity events, such as IPOs, secondary offerings, SPAC fundraising, venture capital investments, acquisitions and other fundraising activities” stop doing that. Your customers keep taking money out of the bank to pay rent and salaries, but they stop depositing new money.

This is all even more true of crypto — I mean, the Fed raised rates once and the entire crypto industry vanished? [4] — but it is not not true of startups. But if some charismatic tech founder had come to you in 2021 and said “I am going to revolutionize the world via [artificial intelligence][robot taxis][flying taxis][space taxis][blockchain],” it might have felt unnatural to reply “nah but what if the Fed raises rates by 0.25%?” This was an industry with a radical vision for the future of humanity, not a bet on interest rates. Turns out it was a bet on interest rates though.

Here’s Bloomberg’s Katie Greifeld:

>Silvergate and SVB “in fact are victims of the same phenomenon as Fed tightening extinguishes froth from those parts of the economy with the most excess — and it’s hard to find more excess than in crypto and tech startups,” said Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge.

And my Bloomberg Opinion colleague Paul Davies:

>Both crypto and venture capital booms were children of the ultra-low rates of the past decade and a half. Now, rising rates and the shrinking of the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet have burst those industry bubbles and increased the competition among banks for funding.

And so if you were the Bank of Startups, just like if you were the Bank of Crypto, it turned out that you had made a huge concentrated bet on interest rates. Your customers were flush with cash, so they gave you all that cash, but they didn’t need loans so you invested all that cash in longer-dated fixed-income securities, which lost value when rates went up. But also, when rates went up, your customers all got smoked, because it turned out that they were creatures of low interest rates, and in a higher-interest-rate environment they didn’t have money anymore. So they withdrew their deposits, so you had to sell those securities at a loss to pay them back. Now you have lost money and look financially shaky, so customers get spooked and withdraw more money, so you sell more securities, so you book more losses, oops oops oops. [5]

As Armstrong puts it, SVB had “a double sensitivity to higher interest rates. On the asset side of the balance sheet, higher rates decrease the value of those long-term debt securities. On the liability side, higher rates mean less money shoved at tech, and as such, a lower supply of cheap deposit funding.”

Also, I am sorry to be rude, but there is another reason that it is maybe not great to be the Bank of Startups, which is that nobody on Earth is more of a herd animal than Silicon Valley venture capitalists. What you want, as a bank, is a certain amount of diversity among your depositors. If some depositors get spooked and take their money out, and other depositors evaluate your balance sheet and decide things are fine and keep their money in, and lots more depositors keep their money in because they simply don’t pay attention to banking news, then you have a shot at muddling through your problems.

But if all of your depositors are startups with the same handful of venture capitalists on their boards, and all those venture capitalists are competing with each other to Add Value and Be Influencers and Do The Current Thing by calling all their portfolio companies to say “hey, did you hear, everyone’s taking money out of Silicon Valley Bank, you should too,” then all of your depositors will take their money out at the same time. In fact, Bloomberg reported yesterday:

>Unease is spreading across the financial world as concerns about the stability of Silicon Valley Bank prompt prominent venture capitalists including Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund to advise startups to withdraw their money. …

>Founders Fund asked its portfolio companies to move their money out of SVB, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified discussing private information. Coatue Management, Union Square Ventures and Founder Collective also advised startups to pull cash, people with knowledge of the matter said. Canaan, another major VC firm, told firms it invested in to remove funds on an as-needed basis, according to another person.

>SVB Financial Group Chief Executive Officer Greg Becker held a conference call on Thursday advising clients of SVB-owned Silicon Valley Bank to “stay calm” amid concern about the bank’s financial position, according to a person familiar with the matter.

>Becker held the roughly 10-minute call with investors at about 11:30 a.m. San Francisco time. He asked the bank’s clients, including venture capital investors, to support the bank the way it has supported its customers over the past 40 years, the person said.

Nah, man, you don’t get to be a successful venture capitalist by taking a long view or investing in relationships or being contrarian. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, this is unfair. Of course they were right — Silicon Valley Bank did collapse, and if you got your money out early that was good for you — but that is largely self-fulfilling; if all the VCs hadn’t decided all at once to pull their money, SVB probably would not have collapsed. [6]

But it did:

>Silicon Valley Bank collapsed into Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. receivership on Friday, after its long-established customer base of tech startups grew worried and yanked deposits.
