>Which cards with are actually worth their annual fee?
none, unless you spend literally six figures on credit cards every year

these are the cards I use, there is no annual fee on all of them:

3% cash back at restaurants: Savor card by Capital One

3% cash back at gas stations: AARP card by Barclays

3% cash back at grocery stores: Blue Cash Everyday card by American Express

5% cash back on my streaming, internet, and cell phone bills: Cash+ card by US Bank

2% cash back on everything else: Fidelity Rewards card by Fidelity Investments

I'm a big believer in cashback cards with no annual fee. It's okay to get an Amex Platinum or a Chase Sapphire Reserve card but you should understand that these credit cards are luxury items like buying an iPhone instead of an Android or buying a new BMW instead of a used Toyota. The main reason you should get an Amex Platinum or a CSR is so you can swipe into the luxury airport lounge and order a free cocktail and sip it while thinking about how you're better than all the normies who can't get into airport lounges.

But when it comes to saving money I guarantee you that if you use Microsoft Excel or pen and paper to figure out what your expected rewards from using the cards I listed versus using an Amex Platinum or a CSR, you'll find that you'll have more money at the end of the day if you use a wallet full of zero annual fee card with specific cash back categories

>> No.53991868

>>53991800
That Amex card sounds good. I got the Blue cash preferred for the sign on but haven't been utilizing it well enough for the annual fee. I know i am at least breaking even, but 3% no fee sounds a lot better.

>best no-annual-fee setup
Discover It for 5% back rotating
Chase Freedom Flex also for 5% back rotating
Citi Double Cash or other 2% everyday or Venmo card for 2/3% on everything else
You're guaranteed 6 months of 5% back groceries, 6 months of 5% back gas, and 6 months of 5% back restaurants/paypal/amazon/walmart etc most years, though occasionally the rewards categories are identical
The rewards are also capped at $75 a quarter, depending on how much you spend

>best pointsmaxxing setup if you fly a lot (more than 5-6 times a year) and can justify the $295 dollar fee after the airline credit
Chase trifecta
Chase Sapphire Reserve for 2x point redemption and travel, transfer points to hotel/frequent flyer programs
Chase Freedom Flex for effective 10% rotating when transferred to CSR
Chase Freedom Unlimited for effective 2.25-6% on everything else

you donkey, 5% back for 6 months (and 0% back the other 6 months) works out to 2.5% back over the full 12 months which is worse compared to cards that give 3% back all year round

cards with rotating categories are a literal scam, don't make a list of cards with rotating categories and then tell anons that it's "the best no annual fee setup"

Amex gold, just hit the bonus last week. No idea what I’m going to use the points on but I do feel like a baller using it. Also all the websites that say how much points are worth are total bullshit, if they say it’s worth 1000 it’s really like 500. Quick review

Pros
>feels cool
>$10 monthly Uber reimbursement
>random offers like $10 off chevys or $50 off ray bans
>bonus points equal about 2 year annual fee

Cons
>$250 annual fee
>$10 Uber credit doesn’t roll over. I have had the card for 3 months and have used it once
>offers make me spend more money that I probably wouldn’t have spent.

My credit card set up:

Apple card 2% cash back everywhere (1% with physical card + 3% at preferred vendors. These two happen rarely and cancel each other out to average 2%)

That's it right now.

I looked into other no fee cards that give 3% back in certain categories, but the simplicity of having one card is worth the extra percentage point. Having multiple cards with different sign up bonuses and periodic offers makes you spend more than you otherwise would. Having all my spending in one card with a well thought out interface also makes tracking spending a breeze and makes me spend even less.

Might get another card one day, but for now I don't see much use for it considering I have no immediate need to build credit past where I am currently (749). Can also request to increase my CLI every three months with apple card so my utilization remains low.

Apparently they're coming out with a corresponding high yield savings account too, but that remains to be seen

picrel is probably the best card on the market, letting you get 5x on everything up to $25k spend a year if you are willing to jump through some hoops buying gift cards at Staples or ODOM

also gets 5x on cable/streaming/wireless/internet bills

also lets you redeem your UR for 1.1x cash value as statement credit vs cable/streaming/wireless/internet bills

I just signed up for AMEX Platinum last night. For $700 I get
>80k point welcome bonus, about $800
>$300 credit to a luxury stay at a hotel with my wife which I was already planning
>$200 Uber eats credit
>$240 Disney plus credit
>$150 Walmart plus credit
>$200 airline incidentals credit
I’m flying out to DEFCON this year, so I’ll book that with AMEX travel and expense the receipts to work but pocket the cash back. And I’ll use the incidentals credit to get WiFi, alcohol, etc. Plus I can hang out in the delta lounge at my airport before I depart and get free alcohol and food there

The majority of people spend money the moment they get it tho. When you give them 10k credit give them 4 months and they are 4-5k in debt

I think it's best to have at least two, if only as a backup. I once had my CC# stolen, it took 3-4 days for a new one to come through the mail and I didn't have a ton of cash on me, so I couldn't get gas/groceries/etc. And that's in the best case scenario, if I wasn't able to draw for a few weeks (locked bank account, etc) I'd be fucked.
If your heart is really set on only having one card, at least have a second bank account and keep a few hundred in cash in a safe place.

Not really applicable in this case since Apple Card doesn't require the use of a physical card--in fact discourages it. So not only is it extremely unlikely for the card to get stolen (the number is only visible in a password protected wallet app + advanced fraud protection), but the replacement would be instant.

All that aside, it is a good idea to have an emergency fund regardless of how many cards one has.
