Is Boston a good place to move to if I want to make it? Does it have good career prospects? Currently living in Miami, but looking to move away by next year.

absolutely not

first of all the taxes are insane, if you own property expect to pay double what youre paying in florida. Also there is a 12% capital gains tax

second the infrastructure is shit. potholes everywhere, buildings old and falling apart, nobody cares anymore.

third you will be surounded by the most yuppie holier than thou liberal scumbags youve ever met

fourth the weather sucks ass, i mean it really sucks bad you dont even understand. In florida you get "rainy days" which means an hour of rain. In mass you can get a whole week where you dont see sunlight because of the cloudiness. plus its cold as fuck 8 months out of 12

Good career prospects buy expensive as hell. Be prepared to commute 1 hour in hellish traffic to travel 10 miles and live in a crowded suburb in a tiny shack that costs $700k.

Dude it’s awful. Sure it has some charm with Boston harbor, Faneuil Hall, cute college chicks, brownstones, cobblestone streets etc; but once that wears off you’ll be paying exuberant rent and competing for a limited amount of high paying jobs. You’re living standards will drop from the combo of paying high rent, parking fees, expensive food, homeless nigger drug addicts, and nightlife etc. If you have a great job offer in the bean, I recommend you look to buy a house in the Providence area and commute an hour to Boston. Rhode Island is much cheaper and way more laid back. There’s beaches, bitches and great food here and it’s not nearly as overpriced or congested as Boston. Plus the people are slightly more welcoming and way less libtarded.

I can't take Florida anymore. Yeah, the women are hot and the weather is great, but the vast majority of people here are clinically retarded. I need intellectual stimulation. At least in Boston I can find work in my field (policy) and probably go back to grad school there.

>>53944029
I'd probably live in Boston for two years max. Just hoping to experience new things, find my wife, and network professionally as much as possible.

>>53944067
Certainly pays higher than Florida, even with MA state taxes.

I grew up an hour outside the city and went to college in Boston

It's insane how much it's changed in even 10 years

Rent for a 2BR can be nearly $4,000. If you want to "make it" move to Silicon Valley or NYC, where if you want to be a good slave you can actually achieve something

Boston is a city full of retard Goodwill Hunting townie masshole types and college students

>> No.53944101

To add to this, the only time I'd consider moving to Boston is if I was starting a biotech company or getting a degree at one of the top schools in the area

Other cities/states offer much better risk reward

on thing you will learn about MA is that every road has sunken manhole covers. Like they didn't even bother to even that shit out, just dropped it and paved around it.

Also massholes are no joke, imagine a social markist who's only polite because that's part of the protocol. no real conversation, or opinions, just flaccid conversations and a steadfird vibe. Been here 7 years, i'm so tired of it, least sympathetic people in the Union.

God I miss it (Boston suburbs; not Boston proper). People in Maine are as retarded as Florida, plus worse fucking weather, and you need to drive 2 towns (20minutes) to find a dunks.

This is pretty much spot on. The rent in Boston is unfathomable, and the stock is total shit. The women here suck and the nightlife does too. Providence unironically has more nightlife and better women than Boston. The problem with Boston chicks is that the Harvard and MIT women don't want to "date down" and have massive egos. Very ugly women as well. In terms of jobs, Boston is very good if you're in Biotech - if not, its not worth pursuing a career here.

This anon is correct that Providence is a better choice. Right now, the commuter rail runs from Providence to South Station in Boston in about 45-50minutes at $5-9 per ride. 45-50 mins may sound like a lot, but when I was still working in the office that would be a normal commute for me WITHIN Boston. Secondly, an impoverished neighborhood North of Providence is opening a new stop on this commuter rail. Providence is gentrifying fast, you can still find cheap rent and houses for purchase in Providence and within 10 years the neighborhoods will become much wealthier as many Bostonians flee to Providence to work from home and find more affordable houses OR more people are priced out of Boston rent market and choose to live in Providence and commute to Boston on the commuter rail. Providence itself is a nice town that has cleaned up a lot since the 1980's and still has colonial charm. Even the poor area's aren't full of the typical coonery and buffonery that you would find in the poor and dangerous areas of other major American cities.

Of the four places I’ve lived, I’d rank it dead last. I’d recommend Chicago if you’re for a larger northern city with a far lower cost of living. Madison and Minneapolis are nice too but smaller. All have areas of more intellectual work.

No it doesn’t pay as well as NYC, but it is just as expensive. So you might end up having to get a roommate to live in the city proper even if you do make $100k

I've been to every state and lived in about 12. For my money, the Boston suburbs (with yuppie money) are the best place in the country to raise a family. I would love to retire there. Since you mentioned "intellectual stimulation" and going to grad school, Boston has some of the best universities in the world and if you can get in they would look great on your resume and would absolutely be worth it.
That said, I agree with the rest of the thread that it can be difficult to "make it" there compared to other cities. Housing is out-of-control, and comparable to a city like Los Angeles where your entrypoint for a house is near $1m and a decent condo is $800k. The other anons comparing it to NYC are exaggerating (NYC is more expensive) but not by much. For public policy in particular, it won't pay as much as DC or NYC but it's better than most other cities on the east coast. There is a huge local community for lobbying/political finance/international relations/etc.
