You have stats knowledge, what happens in the tail risk case, something with 4SDs variance that will "never" happen? You cannot know with any certainty what will happen, so you cannot ever ever take excessive risk. Have an entry and exit plan and follow through if it goes against you

Having said that, a short lets you borrow shares to play the downside. There is a borrowing fee. You have to cover if the price moves against you.
Selling a call is not what you want to do.
Buying a put lets you effectively short something on leverage. However, options have Greeks which determine the pricing. If it's an obvious piece of news, the price will be inflated and you'll often still lose money even if you're correct.

Separately from all that, if you're a stats/math nerd, options trading might be a good specialization. What sort of metrics are you looking at for this company?
