Ok, biz, I don't really lurk here because trading coins is meh. Very boring. Does not make ADHD fairy happy.

I'm a journeyman welder but having come up in industry on good-quality name-brand tools I know shit for fuck about budget tools. I have good tools from working plenty of contracts but now that I'm going into business for myself I just don't have $2k to drop on tools that are not day-in day-out use. Like a plasma cutter. I spend about 3 days a week making parts, and I can get that down to 2 using a plasma cutter.

I have been cutting all my steel with a skinny wheel or the diablo steel demon but setting up the cuts takes forever and I'm loosing all my profit on parts cutting (still cheaper than out-sourcing by a factor of 10) hence I need to make parts cheaper by using better tools.

So the big question, does the plasmargon cut60hf-p make a good cut? Will it last the two years I need to come up with the money for a cnc? Hows the cut quality at 1/2" (13mm) steel? have any of you ever mounted a machine torch to it? Does it take hypertherm consumables (if not what style does it take)? How many CFH does it actually need? I already have to upgrade my compressor to run a plasma anyway so planning on going big and cheap there.

assuming you know how to use it to make your life easier, always buy the best tool that you possibly can. i'd say even go into debt for it if you have consistent work. i'm not a welder but it's never failed me to pay full price for top end equipment that i couldn't find second hand.

I do buy a lot of junk from them. But for hazard fraught money I may as well go with hobart because at least that uses miller consumables and a bunch of the boards are the same. Also miller tech support has been great to me for a bunch of years.

The consumables for the china machines are stupid cheap compared to the American stuff.

I own two millers and a hobart welders.
My plasma is a hypertherm and the consumables are very expensive even for generics. When it dies I am going to replace it with a china one just for the savings on tips and electrodes.

That's one thing I was looking at. I can't get them locally, but for the price, I can easily keep double the consumables on hand. In the case of equipment I use regularly I would like to keep it either cheap enough to pitch or nice enough to fix. Hazard fraught rides the gray area between the two really hard and tech support is terrible when I do need them. At least with miller/hobart and fleabay junk I can ship overnight with priority AM delivery have have it when I need it instead of explaining to the plant manager why crew is standing around with their thumbs up their asses.

thanks for the heads up bro! I havent been able to find anything on the actual tips beyond brand specific part numbers the chinesium units use. but if they mostly use the same thing that makes it much simpler to figure out which ones to get and not end up with 100 of the wrong thing.

For reference, I put in an offer of 232 on a plasmargon cut60hf-p since I found one cut65hf for 211 without the pilot arc. If this thread is still up when I get the counter offer I'll update you.
