I don't. But sometimes index investing just feels hollow and I start questioning why I even bother.

What is the point of buying ETFs as a poorfag if the expected rate of return will never be enough to change your life in any significant way?
So I get an average of maybe up to 10% a year. Great. That means I'll have maybe a million by the time I'm a decrepid old man that feels like a stranger in a foreign world that has long since moved past what I understand or appreciate.
Maybe two million if the returns are truly exceptional in the next few decades.
That amount of money will be fucking nothing in 2060, 70 or whatever, implying I even live that long and global life expectancy doesn't start falling off a cliff soon.
I guess I could at least leave the wealth to my descendant before I die, so they can have a head start and have an actual chance of accumulating a truly significant amount of wealth over their own lifespan, but that would imply that I will ever be able to reproduce.

I try to shun these doomer thoughts that tell me the slow and steady approach is useless for anyone that doesn't already have significant capital to start with. But it's a constant inner battle.

Western Digital's digital tape segment is barely a whimper compared to their spinning magnetic disk/HDD business. But you are right, they won't die just like their competitors Toshiba or Seagate, the business is effectively a oligopoly and as long as flash drives keep wearing out and are priced higher per GB/TB than hard drives, hard drives will still drive the cloud side of things where all that Google Drive capacity or whatever cloud storage you are using needs to have a large portion of that storage using HDD. At worst, they get taken private but it's not going to tank unless some revolutionary memory technology gets invented tomorrow that WD has no stake in.

I think what you named are the go-to data firms for three different countries, who also compete for public sales. They will each have some level of buyer for eternity unless something exceeds disk storage for long haul.
They may well develop that, but normally that's something like IBM or TXN which does end up with that.

The way it works is that if you hold the bond fund for its average duration it performs identically to if you had just bought the individual bond itself. Its weird but true.
>>53866224
Because I'm a boglehead that refuses to time the market. A ton of people were claiming interest rates were done climbing because inflation was tamed for a bunch of cope reasons. If that's true obviously you'd go long in bonds now. But it wasn't true. So technically I could go cash gain until it's ready. But I don't do this full time and could easily miss the timing. I could be wrong next time and miss out on when interest rates plateau. So I just go long. It works out nicely because the extended long term bonds inversely correlate with my stocks

Also literally no one seems to understand the idea of capital appreciate when it comes to low bond rates. Bond convexity means that when rates are most of the profit is from selling your LTT when rates fall. Pic related, EDV with an average maturity of 25 years will have profit that increases the lower rates go
>4% to 3% - 12.5%
>3% to 2% - 17.5%
>2% to 1% - 22.5%
>1% to 0% - 24.5%
It's the reason you still see people buying bonds at negative rates. At -1% interest rates if they fall down to 2% you see a 30% increase

And mind you I'm saving long term. Even with fluctuations, LTT always perform the best.
