I’m in debt that I’m trying to get under control. I found out recently that the collections agency called looking for me at a job that I left a year ago, they told my ex boss that I had a debt, and they told him how much it was. Is this legal? I know they can call your employer, but telling some random person that I have debt and telling them how much seems to be going too far. Even if I no longer work there it is embarrassing as I still have a friendly relationship with this previous boss.

Embarrassing.

What's your line of work? How much debt do you have?

Don't think it's illegal. I once had a collector that sent me my old resume from 2016 (one I had in linked.in) through a WhatsApp message and "exhorted" me to pay up or everyone will know I'm a debtor.

I ignored him and moved on to miss their calls.
