actual former tradefag here, started as an electrical helper at 19 right after high school, worked three years as an apprentice at a residential and commercial firm, got some training but mostly learned by seeking out people who actually want to mentor and teach, what they don't tell you is that nobody gives a fuck about legitimately training you, sometimes you are taught unsafe/poor skills and get hurt and there is no recourse, after i got some experience i was doing more advanced tasks and got offered a job at a train company as an inhouse sr apprentice, i did that for a year and quit to go to college because shit was dangerous, i was coming home everyday covered in dust, rust, and grease, also working with high voltage multi-source systems can be really dangerous when you are depending on druggies, assholes, and low IQ faggots to make sure the panel or equipment is properly electrically isolated, long story short i took some student loans and used my savings to get an electrical engineering degree from a state school, now i work as a corporate architect in an engineering firm making 140k and never have to use a multimeter

tldr trades will fuck you up because your life depends on retarded, drunk, or druggie coworkers

Welder is not a trade...
Its a small part of several trades like ironworkers, steel stud carpenter or steamfitters. Lots of welding is just factory work and pays dick. Half a step above fork truck licensee.
Also, the trades pay shit in the south, which throws off national averages by allot. A guy making 60$ on the check with good free benifets on top of it in chicago, philly or portland is making 18$ in texas with no retirement or health, maybe a crap 401k match if they are lucky.

Skilled specialized welders make good money.
Apprentice welders make warehouse wages.
It's the same with most trades.
You start with the basics. Getting sustainable wages for an efficiency. You move up to journeyman after 2 years of busting ass and learning. You apply to a new company making better wages (2 bed room apartment). Do that for 3 years. Still learning. You get trained in something that requires expert precision and has moderate hazard. Now you command a six figure salary. Or, you saved up and penny pinched for 5 years and start freelancing. Take on small contracts with a couple of Mexican helpers. Build report with companies. Hire Apprentice zoomer. Make them do the shit part and get paid to check their work.
No one says trade = instant upper middle class.
