Each cannabinoid binds to different receptors for different amount of times. For example, delta 9 THC and CBD share one receptor, but also bind to different ones. (Delta 9) THC-O binds to receptors longer than regular delta 9 THC, which is why it's "stronger". Not 100% on of they bind to the exact same receptors though, never looked that far into it.
