That's good for good. The economy dependant commodities are not the play I agree with that. I think people like them because of underinvestment in new capacity in recent years. That one thing that gets mentioned anyway. And maybe because of inflation. But yeah if the economy does very poorly these cyclical commodities are not going to do well, all you have to do is look at the historical chart and see what happened in 08/09 and the early 00s. Also something that has been a huge tailwind for commodities since 2000 has been the rise of China, they have been a neverending pit of commodity demand. But that growth is probably flattening out now as their population is now peaking and will start declining and they seem to have built so many high rises that there isn't even enough people to live in them.

Their very interested in Dolly Varden Silver's expanded property at Alice Arm now, that will probably become a buy out in the coming year or so, if Dolly Varden doesnt decide to build the mine themselves that is. I noticed SSR Mining has that same problem. They have 7 abandoned properties they have title to that they have to clean up and monitor. Meanwhile Hecla seems to get away with mothballing properties and planning site decommissioning 5 years ahead of time, meaning 75% of the mess is already cleaned up well in advance of them having to properly get started. I don't know what they were doing in the 70's, but I know they got tagged in the summitville cleanup, the Leadville cleanup, and Bunker Hill, among others. I worked for them in Leadville and Bunker Hill as a contractor.

I know they were in Leadville in the 1800's. Leadville smelting barons bought them out. Not sure when Hecla started working in my town, the earliest records I have is my great grandpa back in the 20's working on a project for them. So 100 years ago. But that project ran right up until the 70's and I've done contract work for them as recently as 20 years ago.

I was only there for a week getting my crew set up. It was a great gig and I don't hate that part of the country at all. If I didn't live here I'd be there. Very pretty country, nice people, lots of silver mining history and opportunities.
I visited the Sunshine mine while I was there, I have a morbid fascination with mine safety and accidents.

I really want Bunker Hill to get off the ground again, if they can do it we can too. Rooting for them all the way. Though I expect if my town ever mines our silver it'll be an open pit and that irritates me a bit. Because of the history that will be lost. But mining is more important than old bottles, so whatever. It'd be worth it.
I'm getting old though. If we start mining silver I'll sell my couple mines and probably move.

Hard to say here, everything was underground and that went on right up into the early 2000's. But most of our remaining ore is below 1000 feet and you hit water well above that level here. Extremely wet mines with all the problems that go with that. If they don't work it as a pit I'm guessing they'll need much better tunnels to drain the mountain. They've mined well below the elevation of the town by now. I mean they had mined a thousand feet below the town clear back in the 1800's, but they went even deeper in my lifetime. The grade drops off at the water table, but it's still fabulously rich down low. Just expensive to dewater and haul up.

we actually had a similar fire in a mine near me in the 80's, but because they had an open haulage adit at the 1600 level they were able to evacuate everyone above and below the fire. Several injuries, no deaths.

funny thing about the Eagle Mine fire is the ore actually started burning. So they closed the mine and put in fireproof bulkheads. They tried to flood the mine but the water level isn't high enough so it's still burning 40 years later. You can drive down the highway in winter and see patches of melted snow with steam rising off them where the burning pyrite ore is heating the ground. I wonder if they'll ever open that mine up and find it full of metal that smelted itself over time. It was mostly a zinc/lead mine, one of the biggest ever. But there's enough iron, silver and gold to make me wonder what that ore looks like now.

sulfide ore, if in the right situation can spontaneously combust. I ve heard of it happening in the boundary region of BC and in Washington state, whole hillside were set ablaze by sulfur gausons burning. The sulfur starts burning, and once thats happening, it doesnt really stop until the high concentration area is depleted. It most often seems to happen after a major rainstorm, followed by heat. The process is poorly understood, i am sure its even less understood underground. In the boundary region, its been thought many hyper high grade surface outcrops of gold / silver ores, especially associated with the copper belt region were generated by these fires. The sulfur burns out all the lower grade materials, leaving a red oxide cap and a honey comb of host rock filled with precious metals.

so the old guys tell me. The fire started about the same time zinc markets collapsed and the EPA went after the company, so it was just part of a perfect storm for the mine. My uncle worked there before the fire and he tells me they only employed a handful of underground miners at that time. It wasn't a big operation by the time it closed if I'm getting my stories straight. I have some ore off that mine that my uncle highgraded. Pretty stuff.
