This bad boy was a match case from the 1880s I found on eBay accidentally. It was allegedly 0.8 silver and about 4cm. I bid up to £30 but it went for £160. I’ve never seen another turn up. Googling it I saw another on Etsy but it sold.

Well, you need to polish coins really hard to make a mirror surface and that requires a thick layer of plated metal everywhere. Cheap plating kits use pens or brushes and cannot do that, it requires a professional plating set like this.

Rare and unusual silver items tend to fetch a big premium usually. I've seen all kind of beautiful old stuff like pyrogenes, mouchette scissors (to extinguish candles), snuffboxes, vinegar cruet tops, decorated sewing needles' cases, chocolatieres, etc... go for x3 to x10 silver spot.

Old candleholders also are very popular and tend to go for big money if they are in solid silver.
From times to times i lurk on auction websites for richfags. You wouldn't believe the cash they spend for silverware if they are in good condition and old enough. Especially the rare and large items, like water fountains, large sculpted plates and vegetable dishes.

Match holders or "vestas" are very collectible, some selling for several times what that one did so while quite expensive compared to bullion $200 for an antique OG merchant is probably not a bad deal. I'd be inclined to buy one to make a silicone mold of, then make wax castings for lost-wax silver home-pours. I had been looking for Polish "happy merchant" figurines, the ones with a smiling Jew holding a coin used as good fortune charms kinda like the maneki-neko cats to make silver castings of but that vesta is even better than what I've come across so far.

I was watching a poorly listed batch of cutlery in the UK that ended yesterday, probably about 36-40 chunky hallmarked sterling dinner forks and soup spoons I'd estimate weighed between 2.2-2.5kg, no mention of sterling in title or description so I thought it might fly under the radar and go cheap but it sold for 920 GBP or around $1,100, definitely below melt but not cheap enough for me. Even with the cost of shipping to the USA I've scooped up some good deals from English sellers but it doesn't happen too often. I get the impression that competition in the UK for your antique sterling is very robust, probably because the obnoxious VAT on silver bullion makes hoarding antique sterling an appealing stacking strategy, do you have any insights about that hunch?

How do you recognize silver? Just trying to check my local eBay equivalent to see if the below-spot meme is real.
