I have often pondered this and at the end of the day the only real reason they keep it and put so much effort into it is because other people say they should. My sister and cousin both shilled linkedin to me but I don't need it, I just use a regular application like a normal person. I also have found that people use verbose definitions of what their jobs are. It's literally stuff like "We continuously work to improve safety initiatives and promote continued success in our markets" when they're just a basic middle manager.

I recently opened up a linkedin because I can link it to my company's internal info and that may help for potential promotions within the company.
