market value is predicated on adoption. xrp needs users who will be validators and maintain/support the network, i.e. banks. xrp offers no reward for validation or mining. this makes a lot of sense because the it's the users who should have the greatest interest in the health of the network, and it avoids all the disadvantages of the PoW model. ripple needs to win the case for xrp to have a chance.
