The token is to secure the network or if someone needs erc-677 for their tx. Let me explain a little better. It doesn't matter if link is used for payment of link services. When economics 2.0 and staking v1 is fully fleshed out the network will be secured using chainlink. People staking and by extension securing the network will still be earning the fees. If network effect pushes chainlink into securing trillions upon trillions of dollars as is Sergeys target then the fees will be tremendous. This creates buy pressure and incentive for people to compound earnings back into link staking. So in essence, link still becomes the new petro dollar in the metaphor.
