You're a good boss, but a shitty capitalist. Assuming that they're being fired for things that aren't their fault (broader health of the company) you shouldn't make it personal.

Tech. A pretty small firm. I started suspecting one of my reports was falsifying data to make his performance look better. IT and HR both performed audits and confirmed basically everything I suspected. Now I have to go through with this or else upper management is going to put my ass on the line. He has three kids and a wife that doesn’t work. I just wish like hell I could go back a couple weeks and turn a blind eye and shut my fucking my mouth…

Like what, exactly? What can you falsify? I work in a fairly large consulting firm so falsifying hours billed to clients for performance is real for me, but that wouldn't apply to tech so what are you talking about?

PROTIP: have a second manager in the room when he gets the bad news. It will help keep him from getting angry if he's outnumbered.

>> No.53580285

It’s usually pretty easy to exit employees that are underperforming. They know it’s coming and as long as you don’t act like a total pussy, they’ll accept the new reality pretty quickly.

If he starts crying like a bitch or begs for his job you gotta hold the line and offer no leeway on the outcome. You’re actually respecting him as a fucking man by holding him accountable. If you didn’t hold him accountable and let him keep his job, it would mean he doesn’t know how to do his job and you think lesser of him as an employee and as a person.

Nah, you have no idea what positive changes in their lives can result from you shitcanning them. I've been fired a number of times. The first time was startling, I'll admit, but the last times were just laughable and freeing. One's job isn't everything. If you really hate firing people, then get a job where you don't fire people. You never know how you might be liberating them.

>> No.53581785

I'll tell you what my big boss told me the first time I had to fire someone:

"You didn't fire the employee. They fired themselves."

If they fucked around, didn't do the work they were paid to do, etc etc, and you as a manager did whatever you could to straighten them out to no avail, they fired themselves.

You're just delivering the news to them.

I feel you. I had to chew out one of my workers some weeks ago. His only fault was forgetting to close a door, but it led to a dangerous situation. He's a very meek old man in his 60s and he started crying in the middle of it.

Good thing we still can actually fire people in USA unlike Europeans

I have been fired and am now a manager myself. I still think my old manager from 6 years ago made a mistake by firing me, and the company I'm a manager at now is their biggest competitor. It's my dream to one day, somehow, be in a position that irrevocably destroys that shitty manager who fired me years ago.

Anyway OP I firmly think people deserve warnings, etc. before you actually fire them. I wouldn't do it if I were you, but I'm not you I guess.

Meanwhile I just got forced out of my job which I desperately needed while fighting health issues, did a slam dunk job but stepped on my managers toes, then after they cut my hours to nothing they told the UI board I quit suddenly without warning or reason.

I really fucking hate this world, OP will end up turning a blind eye to this anon and will likely bite him in the ass and the anon will get away with it.

In that hypothetical, try to find that guy another task that they can do well. If there's another job that they are able to do for you, something that clicks for them, they'll be very productive.

If you don't have that alternate job for them, and don't have anyone else that does, that you could do them a favor for by matching up this dedication with an appropriate job, then it's no longer within your arcs.
