Yes and no. Good laws for landlords would mean that more of them would be willing to rent the houses that they otherwise hold as investments. However, despite what boomers say, housing will not be a good investment for the next decade, if not longer, if the population decline trend continues.

>> No.53573487

yes.
Exponential property tax. The more properties you own, the more you pay per property

slumlords and property companies get outcompeted by boomers who buy just one extra house. Loads of houses come on the market again, price of property becomes affordable again, demand for rent goes down, rent itself goes down.

Will never be implemented because bankers have loads of property on their sheets and will destroy any politician who suggests this

Heavily taxing also mean that people who are creative simply move to regions where tax is more relaxed. It is happening now in Europe where a lot of our companies moving out. People in Europe who cheer for the war in Ukraine to continue for long as possible do not realize that it will kill us economicaly if we do not find compromise with Russia. There also the fact that we did print to much money waay before covid. And with the starting recesion it will be fucking hard to get out of it since the old lets print money to boost it would mean that the inflation would not be 15-20% but 40-60% And at that point it would likely go out of control.

Real Estate reciprocity would do more for housing prices than any landlord taxes. Can a citizen buy RE in your country? No? Then you can't buy in this country. It keeps Chinks from buying up all of the property in the West as a way of getting their wealth out of their bat eating country. But it would involve standing up to Winnie the Pooh, however with the Chink balloon fiasco it's clear the government will never stand up to China and continue to let them buy up our real estate. The West and China are in a cold war but the governments of the west are siding with the Chinese.

Taxes don’t matter because if they got lowered then demand would increase and prices would go even higher. Rents are usually set at the highest someone reasonably thinks they’ll get for a place so if you pay 2,000 and the landlords cost go down you’re not getting any savings he’s just making more.
If you want to lower the cost of housing create bans on speculation it’s not that hard.

Serious question. How does the government track how houses someone owns? What prevents an individual or group from opening 500 LLCs and putting each of their 500 properties in each one? Because that’s what large landlords do. Good luck figuring out that a property is owned by blackstone; it’s not like they put ownership records in their own name other than maybe their corporate offices. Instead the house on your block they own is probably owned by ‘Hip Hop Properties 123 llc’ with a tax address of a PO Box in your town and maintained by some local property management company they’ve contracted out to. You’d have no idea.

wrong, your assumption is incorrect because you think rent demand remains fixed

but if house prices come down from their current price (due to monopoly, banks and government bailout money), more people can simply buy their own house and there will be less renters

The state of renting is non-ideal and wastes capital. Adam Smith opposed rent-seeking based on land ownership for this reason.

A tax on empty property just preserves the status quo of inflated house prices and a proportion of the country people/capital that doesn't produce and simply extracts rent

an exponential tax on property changes the balance back to single home owners and gives houses their fair price, drastically reducing the capital wound up in rent-seeking without production.

This has all been expounded upon in detail since Henry George, but again, in a corrupt system like democracy we stand no chance.

I have enough money to be a landlord btw. Refuse to do it on moral grounds. Landlords are parasites.

I don't have a problem with charging market rates for rents. I have a problem with the government specifically giving money to asset owners, either directly or through disproportionate tax cuts. (I like tax cuts, but it should be broad and not just focused on asset owners), because government spending and tax cuts are funding by currency devaluation which everyone pays. So the government is charging everyone, redistributing that wealth to asset owners, then saying well maybe they'll give you a fraction of your own money back in return for labor (jobs). So generous!

Just ban private ownership of more than ten acres of land, reduce that to two acres for transportation bottlenecks, deep sea ports, etc. Make renting a crime, and forcibly seize landed estates to redistribute to peasant farmers.

This is absolutely what democracy is. Every democracy, now and forever. The idea of fair elections, honest representatives, unbribed politicians - that's the fantasy. It only exists when the majority of the population is informed and interested in politics and also willing to get violent every time a transgression occurs. Most people are not and do not WANT to be, because that takes far too much personal investment for every civilian. They are not willing to start civil wars every time a lobbyist tries to bribe a senator either. Tolerance of corruption follows and grows until the situation becomes unsustainable. The only thing you can do is what the founders tried to do, which was make the government as incompetent and lethargic as humanly possible.

You mean like when China brought a billion people out of poverty and provided 80% of them with home ownership?

Or when Russia turned one of the most ass-backwards countries in Europe into an industrial titan, single handedly defeated fascism, and became a formost world power?

We're already a totalitarian shit hole, I'm just tired of getting my eggs broken by blatant government corruption.

China didn't have that economic growth until they started setting up special economic zones that modeled themselves after capitalist / industrial systems, and Russia was a world power long before the Bolshevik revolution.

The problem isn't so much the type of system as it is corruption within the system and tricks to deprive people of the fruits of their labor. America is getting nearly as bad as the Soviet Union in regards to corruption and consolidation of power.

Not true.

An example. Religious donations are considered charitable donations that offset tax. If a (and this is just an example) Rabbi owns property. He takes all the rental income and "Donates" it to his own Synagogue. The Synagogue makes no income but yet pays for the Rabbis family.

Does Rabbi really pay higher Taxes if the Tax is offset by him attempting to use the system for his own gains?
