It's very simple and in line with the kind of vague advice you'd usually expect: I just look for mid-term, high-likelihood events. For example, oil is very cyclic and on top of that there were good oil news due to yurop, so I bought into oil around oct and sold at the local top in nov. It went back up after it dropped, but that doesn't matter to me since I made 94% on this trade and it's only back up to par from where I sold.
Another example: I expected more market turmoil. Historically, the first leg is bad for metals, but the second leg is good. I bought pslv at ~$6.5 and sold at ~$8 because that's the local top and it won't break before going down a lot more first in my opinion. Even if it does break, I don't care because I have a sizeable gain on that one again. I also use memelines to decide my entry and exit prices, but no other reason.
The beauty of this is that I don't actually have to be very right, only a little right. The choice of stock relying on a multitude of slow metrics, like overall company health but also current overall sector movements, provides a robust baseline so that you benefit both from underperformance in a hot market and overperformance in a slow market, although obviously you lose if you get underperformance in a slow market. Still, because the metrics are slow, the price action is also far more predictable in my experience, and the timing you need to achieve is far more relaxed than on smaller timescales. Meanwhile I think the risk is less than longer term investments that are viable if you want to hold to retirement but not much else.
I've only been playing this for 1.5 years and only with limited positions so far so don't take that advice as fact or anything though, let it just be a braindump.

1) have an emergency fund in your checking account for when shit goes down like car repair, something like 6 months expenses
2) max out for roth ira, hsa if you got one, and company match 401k
3) put everything else into a brokerage account like fidelity. You're right you want mutual funds, but for a brokerage account that is going to get taxed you want ETFs instead. They perform identically to mutual funds but won't fuck you with capital gains taxes
