I used to be a mobile security guard with 14h shifts, of which well over half was walking, often up or down stairs checking different buildings and areas. Not much to do but eat and sleep when at home. But I wasn't exhausted to death or anything like that. It was kinda comfy even. 4-5 day weekends most of the time. If I ever go back to work, I want long shifts again.

Me and my wife really pondered this before we got our first.
We could retire happily at 30 more or less if we lowered our living standards and didn't have kids.
Having them meant staying wagies at least another 20 years.

We have several friends, older and younger who have made that choice. They all are travelling around the world, living in an island in Cambodia for a few month before spending a summer in Czech Republic etc. True digital nomads with little to no anchors.
It was very tempting for us.

In the end we felt the need to build and transmit something, we found interest in the challenge of raising new human beings and member of society etc.
I don't regret my choice but the other path was also pretty nice and it would have been a very different but equally awesome life.

The risk of having regrets at 50-60 and feeling aimless weighed a bit too

I have a child. I am not a "everyone must have kids"-tard, and good on your friends for actually using that time and freedom they have. Majority of my childfree friends pretend like that is the life they are living, or about to live: "travel", "experiences" thanks to not having kids. All of them end up taking the customary 1 or 2 week trip to Europe and a couple weekend getaways and the rest of their time is used commuting, working and the once a week special restaurant date with other child-free friends to get that one insta story photo of their meals. I think they think they are content, maybe they are, but they seem very attached to old photos of themselves in their early 20s and they'll only get older, more ""anxiety""-induced, lazier, less prone to take risks. They already started going to bed earlier and partying less hard when they were 30, while my spouse and I were still ready to go. Now we're all mid-30s and I really think 40 is going to hit them like a ton of bricks. Life is going to be filled with more loss, sadness. My father-in-law spent a weekend with people 62+ and was absolutely psyched to come back to his grandchild and enjoy playing, going to the library, seeing the world in a new way all over again.

I’ve not found child rearing to be particularly expensive. Once they’re 1 they can eat all the same food you eat. You don’t pay for airline tickets until they’re 2. The big expenses are diapers and occasional upgrades on beds and car seats. Daycare is the biggest expense I’ve seen, but why would you throw your money away for someone else to raise your kid in a place that gets your kid sick every month or so? If my wife and I didn’t work from home the spouse who made less money would/should quit and take care of the kids.

I’d say 40-45 is more realistic.
Let’s say our couple each earns $100k starting at 28. Of that $200k, they see maybe $140-$150k after taxes. If they live on $70k, and save $70-$80k a year, they’ll have well over $1 million in 12 years when you consider interest, and if they work till 45 they’ll be above $1.5 million. That should allow them to get close to replacing $70k they lived on pretty reasonably and growing it to compete with inflation, but I for any real security they’d really want to have paid off their house. But I’d say it’s doable.
