Do banks check to see if you actually filed your tax returns when applying for a mortgage?

Lets say, (hypothetically), that I havent paid taxes but I want to apply for a mortgage. Can I just fill out the tax returns for the last 2 years and submit those as part of the application?

You have to sign a 4506C which allows them to pull transcripts from the IRS. Depending on your income they may not pull it, but anyone can pull it any time and if caught you would get charged with mortgage fraud. At banks I’ve worked we pulled it for everyone

Banks don’t mess around with mortgage fraud, they will come after you and will have support of government since the banks get in big trouble for not reporting fraud. Not worth it to try since you can’t feign negligence
