Daily reminder that finance and economics are pseudoscientific make believe garbage and capitalism is inherently unstable, exploitative and unsustainable with a built in expiration date. Ever escalating recessions, poverty, debt, wealth inequality, monopolies, disease, pollution, exploitation, slavery, conflict and wars are fundamental, necessary and intended principles of it, NOT glitches. Greed, selfishness, lying, cheating, stealing, competition, conflict, slavery and war are behaviors highly encouraged and incentivized under capitalism. It is LITERALLY cancer and i dont mean it metaphorically, i mean it literally, it shares the exact same functions and principles as a cancer cell.

The freer the market the more enslaved everything and everyone else is and the more blood sacrifices need to be performed to "the Line god". An economy needs to be as regulated and planned as possible to serve the living beings needs and desires and be able to be adjusted according to our needs at any given moment/period. finance and stock markets are incompatible with life and are in direct competition

Which they do with deteriorating financials. The same way companies with deteriorating financials cut divvies.

The important part here is "does the company have good financials and a promising future or does it not?" Not what exact % shows up in the "Dividend Yield" field.

>and if you need cash at 52 week lows, you can lose major future gains
You can do a lot more timing by selling a year or two worth of expenses at the 52 week highs than crossing your fingers and hoping that quarterly drip of dividend checks doesn't slow down as your share price tumbles and the company's cash on hand decreases.

i don't really care about dividend yield, just consistent dividend growth rates

my view is that, with the select companies I buy, my income increases regardless of the share price, through recessions, etc.

if a company cuts its dividend I usually sell the entire lot and put it into companies that have kept and raised their dividend for at least 25, sometimes over 50 years. and don't have issues with payout ratios or significant growth headwinds

But doesn't the global economy depend upon treasury bond rates being stable to set rates everywhere? For example if 4% is the risk free return from treasury bonds, then companies all across the world have to offer bonds yielding more than 4% right? If the treasury market ceases to function it seems like that would blow up the entire world's debt market

They will get real assists for pennies on the dollar which is why they do this with companies on the verge of bankruptcy. Companies also cash flow without all the debt service and are still a recognizable household name which could undergo a restructuring after bankruptcy debt free and actually have good free cash flow, this is why people use this strategy.

Oh yeah forgot bond holders are different then stock shareholders... Bond holders are debt holders which means in bankruptcy they are the ones who receive the assets after bankruptcy and all the bad bonds (junk bonds, credit) which are unsecured and reason why you take that risk for 15%, there’s different types of bonds like having a 1st 2nd or 3rd lean mortgage on your house, if you get foreclosed on the 1st lien position holders get 1st dibs before the 2nd 3rd lien holders. Shareholders get nothing or receive .02cents per share and that’s it.

You don’t fucking understand how bankruptcy works or how the bonds of these companies trade. The bond holders will control the company and its assets if they declare chapter 11, there won’t be a fucking auction of their assets to sell to the highest bidder... THEY ALREADY OWN THE COMPANY AND ALL ITS ASSETS IN CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCY AND GET TO DO WHAT THEY PLEASE WITH THE REMAINING ASSETS OF THE COMPANY ASSETS OFF THE BOND DEBT THEY BOUGHT IN THE DEBT BOND MARKETS FOR WAY LESS THAN THR FACE VALUE OF THE BOND.

Usually, the debtor remains “in possession,” has the powers and duties of a trustee, may continue to operate its business, and may, with court approval, borrow new money. A plan of reorganization is proposed, creditors whose rights are affected may vote on the plan, and the plan may be confirmed by the court if it gets the required votes and satisfies certain legal requirements.

Also correct. Carl Icahn will get the stores and land, to set up shop and support his other investments, namely Westpoint Home products and Newell Brands.

Oh I'm not a BBBY investor. I just think all these stories and theories they come up with are quite comical.
Technically depending on the bankruptcy agreement , shareholders can still hold a claim either to the reformed company or to their share of any residual value after bondholders get paid out at par. Bed Bath & Beyond has negative present value though, so in the end all the shareholders can get is whatever the bondholders give them. Likely nothing, but perhaps they'll be given a small snack just for the sake of avoiding future lawsuit risks about lender abuse or other corporate malfeasance.

Jan 17 (Reuters) - Carvana Co (CVNA.N) has adopted a "poison pill" to limit shareholders from raising their stakes and has reached an agreement to sell up to $4 billion of auto loans, the struggling used car retailer said on Tuesday.

The company's shares gained 6.5% to $7.47 in afternoon trade.

Ally Bank and Ally Financial will buy the loans, the company said, giving Carvana a fresh source of funding as it tries to restructure its operations.
