Wut? do you even look at the VIX? 90s millennial, grats your in your 30s now and this is when we make money and can invest. If you were able to in your 20s its an outlier, using general terms like millennial then do not apply. Our financial lifetimes are incredibly short and mine just started in the last 3 years. All that being said the VIX has been 5 points higher on avg since 08. People get scared in volatile markets, they buy high and sell low. Plenty of people sold at the bottom of 2020 and bought back in higher. Same with 08.

Look at the chart in OP's pic. You went from 1998 to 2012 without seeing real gains. And we are talking the SP500 index. If you go with a more agressive index like the NASDAQ, it would be worse. If I held from beginning to end of roman empire I would have lost everything too. Everything collapses, everything dies, its all just time frames, whats yours , when do you sell, when do you buy. Did you cross the street when a car was coming or did you wait. This is a function of a time frame and inputs from events. You choose when to enter and exit the road. When will I enter or exit the market? If I get 100% Gains I should probably take some profits. If I am getting 20% losses maybe I should sell to not lose more. I have only made money selling crypto. Could I have been a millionaire a few times if I didn't sell. Ya. Im also not broke though. Time frames and who you look at it. Nothing is static , especially markets.
