There is something called an "Open Gaming Licence [1]" which allows anyone to use/play with a somewhat pared-down version of the DnD rules, and this includes independent creators of campaigns, merch, etc. D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, plans to retire OGL1 in favor of OGL2, which permits WoTC to take a ~20% royalty and provides for arbitrary cancellation of the license. WoTC will also receive an irrevocable, non-exclusive, commercial license to all 3rd party content created under the OGL2, i.e. they can resell someone's campaign for free.
The OGL1 cannot be legally revoked, thus WoTC has been trying to bully people into signing the OGL2 with a grace period that used to be one week and now has apparently been extended till summer. DnD players are apoplectic and OP's tweet shows the deflection tactic of painting people up in arms about the new license as "bullying".

Hasbro felt they weren't profiting enough off of DnD since they don't copyright the stories and quests random autists and anons make online. Therefore, they will now start doing so. Everyone saw this as kiked and are screeching. Stocks will fall. OP recommends buying at bottom as the stock will inevitably increase once this news cycle passes. I personally wouldn't as this company has been failing for a while now and clearly do not know how to run a business.

I think I've seen one company pull the bullying-card before, though I can't remember which one it was. It's probably a new tactic that's being trialed: if people are outraged about anything, just vaguely allude to mental health and claim that people are "bullying" you - "you" being a company and not a person, since the tweet was written and signed off on by someone in PR.
If they find arsenic in children's toothpaste, you can bet P&G's account will complain about bullying too.

WoTC owns the D&D trademark and sells mainly the books (rule books, books for DMs, books about specific campaigns) in print-form and online. They also have a few apps that contain the information in the books in digitized form (if you bought the physical books, they make you buy them again in digital form).
Independently, people come up with their own campaigns, or film themselves playing D&D and put it on Youtube, or they make 3D-printed figures.
If you're some rando, they're obviously not going to give a fuck, but if you're a small business selling D&D-adjacent content, they'll take a cut of your revenue, or, as the new license entitles them to do, outright resell your content with no royalties going to you.

/tg/ is on fire about it.

So Wizards of the Coast, back in 2000 bade a document called the Open Gaming License, which was to incentivize competitors to make supplementary products for their tabletop game instead of totally competing systems by giving the community a perpetual open license to use all Dungeons and Dragons content that's not trademarked like specific characters or monsters unique to their game setting like beholders.

Hasbro, under new ex-Microsoft management, just told WotC to revise their open license to revoke that, and write a new one that says they own all writes to everything ever written under the old one or will be written under the new one, and all those 3rd party publishers own them 25% of gross royalties. The old extend, embrace, extinguish strategy.

And the entire tabletop community is INCREDIBLY mad about this, because it's like Edison clawing his way out of the grave to try and claim all forms of electric lighting as patent infringement.

And WotC is doing a HORRIBLE job at sage control, basically trying to gaslight the community about it.
Meanwhile every e-celeb in the hobby is telling people to cancel their D&D beyond subscriptions.

Technically, you're right, which is why this is the single biggest boneheaded move by Hasbro I think they could have possibly done.
People do not need them to play the game. They existed entirely on the player based good will.

BUT, if you're asking what people buy that would be affected by this, it's rule books that add content to the game like new classes or items, and pre-made adventures for dungeon masters to run.

The pivot of this would likely be marketing. Many other RPGs and even D&D-like systems (like Pathfinder or "Pozfinder", as I've read it called), but how popular each one is is a question of fashion, influencers, and word of mouth. If someone could get a large amount of D&D-related media figures on YouTube/Twitch/Twitter to shill "what D&D should have been" or whatever, popularity would explode overnight, but if not, then less than 100 people will play it.

>I sure hope people won't start pirating all of the books, or make an offline app that just contains all the spells and stat blocks.
The community did that years ago.
5e.tools

The problem is if their new legal doc isn't struck down in a court of law, they get to take down all the free websites their competitors made that contains all their competitors content.

So for instance, when D&D made 4th edition, most of the community did not like it.
A company called Paizo that used to publish 3rd party adventures for 3rd edition decided they would take the provisions of the OGL and make their own 3rd edition knockoff with blackjack and hookers. They were so successful that WotC lost majority market share to them for a few years, because people liked 3rd edition, and Paizo was effectively releasing more content for a revised and rebalanced 3rd edition.

HOWEVER because Paizo's system "Pathfinder" was released under OGL, by law, they had to put all their actual rules text online in something called an SRD, for free. They only owned the lore and trademarks, because their game was derivative of the open content rules of 3rd edition. Think of it like a really early version of Creative Commons.

We're now at 5th edition, moving to 6th, and WotC says they can retroactively change that agreement, and Paizo has to give them 25% royalties on Pathfinder, also they own irrevocable publishing rights for Pathfinder and can shut it down for any reason at any time, and Paizo can't sue, and if they sue Paizo for non-compliance then Paizo owes WotC's legal fees.

Repeat for every 3rd party publisher in the entire hobby. Mutants & Masterminds, 13th Age, Fate Accelerated and Fudge, Gumshoe, Traveller, Starjammer, THE ENTIRE OSR COMMUNITY.
It's even down to YouTubers with Kickstarters.
They own it, you owe them, you can't touch us.

Right now there's a class action suit about it brewing, and if they win it will probably be followed up by anti-trust litigation.

It's a website made by WotC. It contains a playstore of rules & resources, as well as a lot of fanmade content published via a Steam Workshop sort of dealie. It's got integration for a lot of apps, discord, and some virtual tabletop services (though likely not very much longer on that last one, since they're planning to turn Beyond into one)

The subscription gives you unlimited character sheet slots, let's you share products you own with friends, gain exclusive content, and access to tools that make play easier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/

>>53280620
That is to be determined by said class action lawsuit. Technically OGL 1.0a was not "irrevocable" and only covered "authorized" use, so.... There's a case to be made.

Honestly, even if they lose the case though WotC has still won by distracting and kneecapping all their direct competitors while they're most vulnerable releasing 6th edition/OneD&D whatever they want to call it.

Until the case is settled their competitors can't sell jack shit, which will give them total control of that chunk of the market. Your options will be to play the new version of D&D playable only on their proprietary virtual table table, or play completely old-school pen and paper with books you already own, or play something completely unlike D&D maybe Vampire the Masquerade or Call of Cthulhu, or play nothing at all.

If you want something else that's d20 based or even to play an older version you liked better, too bad your only option is to adopt the new D&D system and buy them via DRM.
No more "no thanks we'll play the old system" like what happened when 4th edition came out.

Well for starters,
1. if they're a player of a different system, then the company that made that system can go out of business and no more content for it will ever be made. No more premade adventures, no more rules books that add more classes, more spells, more items, etc. WotC strangled them with royalty fees or forcibly shut them down, because WotC claimed that company's works actually belong to WotC.

2. If you ever wanted to sell the things you imagined, suddenly now WotC says it's actually theirs and wants a cut just because it's designed for use on their system.

3. Online resources that don't belong to WotC, calculators for building encounters, or aids for making character sheets, or randomly generating dungeon maps, or randomly generating loot from tables in the dungeon master's guide, or virtual tabletops made to play D&D because two of your players are in Australia and two in Kentucky, websites that ever contained those companies from point 1's basic rules as a reference document, they're all gonna be served C&D letters and disappear.

Only americans and bongs think that if you call a nigger a "nigger" and prefer white characters over monkey faces for fucking nordic legends think you're white nationalists.

Seriously wtf happened to this society thinking that if you don't suck the diversity cock you must be a evil nazi cultist?

For the ponies, death to Hasbro of course!

>> No.53292078

MTG is being over saturated and D&D is in a golden age because of critical role. Rest of Hasbro is dying toy company versus Minecraft / pokemon / Fortnite trends.

It's a bad investment and bad management decisions aren't a good sign

LMAO I don't know much about this situation, these games or anything, but considering what they did to Nokia, I wouldn't touch this shit...

Also, after D&D destroyed their content and went woke, a lot of good media is produced using the OGL as a basis for rules while throwing out anything people don’t like. This sounds kind of like revoking your open source license, then saying everyone still using your library (let’s say it’s a time-keeping library and is used in everything) is infringing and owes you all income on all products they build using your timekeeping program.

You can, the issue is anything you produce and publish can get stolen off you, or if it's good enough that you're able to capitalize it you still need to pay WotC. Or both.

Seems more low fantasy than that. Michael Moorcock maybe? Elric and all that
