If you own a business, and that is what stocks are, ownership of a business, the goal is to make money. Yes, you can buy shares and ideally you will see the value go up, but that value is just numbers on a screen. It does you absolutely no good unless you actually exchange that value for money. Now you can sell your stock, but then you'd no longer own it.

Dividends are taking some of the profit out of the company and paying yourself, which is the goal of any business. You still own the same number of shares, you own just as much of the company, but you're paying yourself from the profits the company is making. A well established company absolutely should be paying dividends to its shareholders. Don't ever let anyone say that dividends are meaningless.
