If /smg/ traded properly then memestocks which aren't a total joke like COS would have been posted when they were still like a dollar. /smg/ is not a place where you learn to make money, I don't think sentiment here even matters except that if /smg/ is hyping something it's probably too late. Like how people hated CLF tranny and SOXL tranny at first because of the spam, but then unironically went all in because they bought into the 'hype' on an anonymous imageboard (and these are presumably men over 25, so not just dumb zoomzoom kids, but people with jobs and savings and something to lose) and then got rekt. Now we've got people looking at the market having taken a fucking beating for a month and saying "All in on shorts, bet we dive another 5000 points from here" or whatever. Meanwhile there's nothing going on and no reason to think that before the CPI comes out on thursday, but there's a lot of assumptions to be made the market will crab-green today, pump tuesday, plateau wednesday and then AAAAA thursday on bad CPI data, then next week begin going up again until the FOMC and Jerome (once again) confirms there will be no pivot.

you don't need 7 figures to buy and hold good companies (or a basket of them a la ETFs) and have the discipline to ride out the storm. imagine if you bought during the COVID crash. you could have turns a 5 or 6 figure portfolio into 7 figures

a more experienced trader once told me this:

>you know how in real estate it's "location, location, location." well in trading it's "discipline, discipline, discipline."

and that has resonated with me since. whether you're long or short, riding high or sitting low right now, the real winners of the market will always be those that know themselves and know enough of what they're doing to see it through. be the opposite of a GME reddit baggie. you can make it only if you try

This. I'm sure most anons on here if given $1,000,000 could go without ever waging again and making passive income that yields more than they'd spend. Or at least I could, now if only I had $1,000,000. The biggest problem with that is how to get there.

The trick is to actually do research into a company (hours of research, if not a full work week's worth) where you verify they're not dogshit, aren't in the process of fraudulent bullshit or being eaten alive from the inside by a bunch of consultant whelps running them into the ground, then figure out whether or not they're getting grants or funding from the government and do your best at establishing who is pushing which angle and why. If you don't have a lot of money find a company you love and DCA that shit until it pops, it's really that simple it's just not very exciting. And nobody should touch options until they've paper traded them for minimum a year and understand the greeks, every dipshit that gets lucky buying a 4$ call or put option at the right time is doomed to hell because they'll think they can do it again. Where if they really knew what they were doing they'd have bought a hundred of them and never had to work again. There are very fucking smart people that post here, literal millionaires, the problem is there's also a sea of idiots that don't know a pennystock from a bluechip that are just getting started and a whole rash of ganges gulpers shilling whatever fuckshit they're getting paid to make apu edits for. Here, I'll give everyone a free tip - don't buy shit just because someone says you should, DO buy shit you were thinking about buying for your own reasons that you see confirmation here that it's a good idea. I've made good regular money doing exactly that letting everyone else signal the momentum for me just swinging shit.

"I hear you've been sleeping with that slimeball, Jerome Powell," I said. "Tell me what he's up to, and I'll make sure you never see him again." I leaned in close, my breath hot on her face. "Do we have a deal?"

Her eyes grew wide in fear. "I-I'll tell you everything," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Just please, don't hurt me." I could see the fear in her eyes as I slowly pulled out my .44 magnum. I knew it was the only way to get the truth. She was hiding something - and this was the only way to get it out.

My hand gripped the .44 magnum tightly, my thumb caressing the cold steel in the moonlight. I could see the fear in her eyes, and I knew that I had to do it. This was for the greater good.

I pulled the trigger.

And I watched as her life slipped away.

"I'm sorry, lady," I said, looking down at her body. "But it had to be done."
They had taken everything from me - my money, my wife, my children...

Everything I had ever known and loved, they had taken it all. And I wasn't going to let them take this from me, too.

I knew that I had to do it. For the greater good.

So I fired my revolver, and watched as her life spilled out onto the pavement.

And I knew that I had made the right decision...

For the first time in my life, I felt in control.

Lurk for several years and you'll figure it out. It's far more than just looking at raw financials, and in fact a poor EPS or earnings report is one of the first things someone on the opposite side of a trade will run with in the media. You're delving into the more esoteric side of things when you're doing it at a very high level, there's a chart that gets posted infrequently describing the iceberg of knowledge required. This. It is much harder to beat the market when your fund is trying to make 10% on a billion dollars than it is when you are sitting on $200k as retail and looking to make 10%. You could make ~$1k daily on $200k and in just a months time 20 days of trading youv made 10% on your $200k.

You can't do this with $2billion. You are playing a different game. You wouldn't tell these fund managers to just buy SPY. Their job is basically to provide liquidity across the market with their $2billion. Their existence along with pension funds and people DCA into shit is how the system is supposed to function to insure the 10% over time gains. Do the math on where SPX will be with these 10% yearly gains in 10 years.

>you could buy a 10/10 perfect company but if you buy it at too high of a price you could go years without seeing any gains
To begin, investing has a timescale of way longer than just a year or two or at least real investing does. If you want to gamble then go play the slots or buy scratchers, this ain't the place for that. Secondly, if they're a perfect company then you would be thrilled that the price was static or dropping as it would allow you to build a bigger position for when they do pop. Yes, that idea is entirely counter to what is pushed to most. Yes, that is because there is a whole industry dedicated to getting you to invest like it's a casino. You must become the kind of person that could walk into an actual casino, do one pull of a slot machine, and then leave right after whether you hit the jackpot or watched it light on fire. I'd actually say that's a good litmus test for self control, take a hundred dollar bill to a casino and break it into 20's then do a max bet at the nicest slot machine there and see if you can turn around and walk away whether you win a million or lose. I'd wager the vast majority of people that invest cannot do that - I did it every day for a week on a family trip, max bet 20$ each time, hit a small jackpot on the second day and still went back the next three betting the same 20$ for one pull of another machine. Total invested was a hundred bucks, total return was four grand. If that's not something you can do, you should not ever fuck with options until you can.

that's not how it works. ever read "the boy who cried wolf"? there's no "sometimes it's good!", no, the chances of it being good are so small here that i never buy anything shilled here. much easier to just do my own actual research and strategizing. even if you "threw us a bone", i doubt any of the regulars would ever believe you if for no other reason than because of how many shit picks have been posted.

i even took part in the GME craze and made a fuckload of money off of it, but that's only because i did the DD and had realistic expectations. i didn't think it'd go as crazy as it did but i knew the PS5 would be a major boost to their bottom line, and they had the extremely high short interest. i also didn't bet the farm on it and only took out a small position. my point is, i heard about it from here but i didn't just blindly buy some shit because /smg/ told me to, and honestly at this point im doing so well with day trading technicals on highly active stocks that i don't even need to gamble with penny shits anymore.

>Being a good investor
Used to mean noticing that a business is expanding and more and more people in your environment are becoming customers of that business. That's Lynch's entire approach.
Doesn't apply in 2023, last time it was successful was the smartphone/web app era which has just finished recently.
Also, the most important part of being a good investor in seeing the run coming to an end.

i once recall a presentation by an actual hedge fund manager who quoted pic related. He talked about how although markets may change, elements of its participants do not. He continued, discussing how fear is hard wired into the human brain, and that fear as it happens, is generally activated by the lower part of the lizard-monkey brain rather than the thinking side. That is, when people are scared, they stop thinking, and that when they panic, they make dumb moves -- opportunities to be taken advantaged of

He concluded by joking how he made a living taking money from people who had no business making decisions in the market by being on the other side of their trades, and then offering them advisory/management fees once they give up. He then uses their money to keep beating to a pulp "scared money, weak hands, greedy pigs"

Some things are different, but some things are always the same.

I'd like to see an adjusted table or a more granular breakdown. If I lose in the market for 9 years but then one year I make a 2000% gain then technically you could say the Market beat me "90% of the time" even though I only needed one win.
And if I run a hedge that includes defensive positions like bonds...then yes the market would beat me *during a bull run* like we've had for the last 20 years.

Because despite people telling you to stock pick, the market is mostly driven by algorithms at this point so when the market as a whole moves up your 'pick' (which I assume would be either longs on qcom or shorts on nvda) gets passed over because of every stock moving broadly upwards with the market momentum, which is why trades should mostly be made with the market itself in mind rather than any specific individual traits of the companies, because picking the next 20x stock is impossible statistically.

This i fucking hate the 95% of traders don’t beat the market cope. If you want to be average fine don’t even try but if you accept you’ll lose money for awhile learning to play the game you can do exactly as you said, lose more often than you win and still come out profitable with risk management. And trading is one of the only financial opportunities that scales insanely well, if you get a stack big enough and get good enough at it your returns multiply by insane amounts which is something no buy and hold strategy offers. I don’t want to make it when I’m 70 and falling apart I want to make it in my 30s at the latest and despite the 95% cope plenty of morons on Wall Street manage to figure it out. If the results of the stock are unreasonable then i'd say it is poorly priced, all of the forecast numbers can be changed.

its even more than that
the market is the collective sum of opinions and valuations of millions of traders and firms, and then the ai programs are built on top of that

long term you can still win by investing in value or small cap because of the contrasting goals of short/long term investing. (for example pensions are almost always S&P 500)

And then of course you have fossils like Warren that have been in the game long enough to see traders win only to get btfo repeatedly. Everything thinks they are the next genius

And then the biggest one is this
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z93yWXb9Tb0
Each decade the top 5 largest companies change hands.
>1980 - IBM, AT&T, Exxon, Amoco, Shclumberger, Shell, Mobil, Chevron, Atlantic Richfield
>1990 - NTT, Industrial Bank of Japan, Fuji Bank, Sumitomo Bank, Exxon, Dai0Ichi Kangyo, MUFG, IBM, GE, Tokyo Electric
>2000 - GE, Exxon, Microsoft, Cisco, Pfizer, Walmart, Citigroup, Intel, Royal dutch Shell, Vodafone
>2010 - PetroChina, Exxon, Microsoft, ICBC, BHP Biliton, China Construction Bank, Walmart, Petrobas, Apple, HSBC
>2020 - Saudi Aramco, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Alibaba, Facebook, Tencent, Bershire Hathaway, Visa

Now
>Apple, Saudi Aramco, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Bershire Hathaway, J&J, Visa, United health, Exxon Mobile

Yes there is more arbitrage across the markets as in indexes go up then it is likely your stock will be going up as algos trade the arbitrage to match indexes and things like sector ETFs etc. Which is why sectors mostly match the indexes. But within each sector and industry there are winners that do not largely correlate with the indexes or their sectors in the longterm. Just look at any bundle of lets say 20 stocks in S&P 500 and you will see majority of them have actually not correlated with the broader market all that much. Found a hidden gem. The company is called workhorse WKHS. Basically they offer a fully electric delivery van. Why is that important? Any investor worth his salt knows that the future is trending towards electric vehicles. The USPS is currently in the process of picking a replacement for its entire fleet of vehicles. I think WKHS has a shot to get either full or partial orders from the USPS. They even have an opening for a drone to deliver packages. The thing is basically a delivery truck and drone mothership.

Ignore the leveraged ETFs for a moment and look at the actual valuations of Chinese shit.
They put in a hard bottom in November at the conference where Xi took power and everyone was memeing about the other guy getting dragged out. There was another hard bottom back in March when JPM capitulated and swapped to sell ratings on every single chink stock. Both of these moments marked easy buying opportunities, and I said as much in this thread at those times.

Now China's back inline with where they traded most of 2022. Some stocks are still lower, like BABA, and others are higher. If you look at KWEB on the whole, it's back at Dec 2021 levels, before global markets started declining.
There's a much higher peak from Feb 2021, and you might think Chinese shit is going all the way back to that peak, but that would be retarded. They only reached those price levels in context of the SPAC and tech bubbles of the time. Given where the rest of the market trades today, KWEB at $40 is the realistic top.

the one thing that really makes me doubt my bearish sentiment is the real life I see around me. there are literally no signs of a recession in my personal life anywhere. all hotels and restaurants packed, everyone slammed with work everywhere, real estate still flying off the shelves.
without some big event, what's stopping this economic train? 4% rates won't be enough to fuck all this up, surely.

Lol and they'll say that, right up to the point where they cut rates.
Are YOU really so stupid, to STILL believe the Fed? LMAO REALLY????

They're not going to cut rates with the market marching towards new highs and you're delusional if you think that. They will eventually cut rates but not until everyone feels serious pain. Pivot mass hysteria is out of control.

Agree with this but we'll have two weeks to jack each other off before the fomc cuts the market back down to earth. I'm just here to ride the waves, after all.

>market back down to earth
I don't know if that'll happen anymore. I can also see the market melting up and then one day having a collective moment of clarity where it waterfall crashes like in 2020.

Touch grass. Everyone who goes outside is bitching about prices being sky-high, layoffs, and generally pessimistic about the future.

I agree with you a whole lot, but where I'm doubtful, is the market being this rational. I really wish I could base all my trades on rationality, but I learned the hard way, it's not that easy. Let's see on this one. I'm also in yang since a few days, but my hopes a fading...

While this is true, there are plenty of bearish signs in the economy as well because everything is expensive as fuck. Inputs at my job are at least 15% more expensive than they were last year

All of it is debt financed. People are paying for take away pizzas in weekly installments now. A lot of the people you see spending at restaurants and hotels will go bankrupt the moment they lose their job.
