Hey chuds. I'm considering getting my MBA online starting this year. I have two questions - 1) is the degree worth it, and 2) is it worth it for me?
My stats:
>Age 30
>Middle Management
>$100k salary (1.5x median household in my area).
>Job is 7/10 in my area, truly like it and could see doing this work long term.
>Have BA in Business Management
>Company will pay $5k/yr to degree, would bring my total cost down to about $15-$25k based on the school.
>Looking at schools that are reasonable and accredited, but not top level.
>About 1.5 yrs to earn the degree.
>75% of those above me in the company have an MBA.
>Could realistic get 2 to 3 more promotions within this company in my life/the next 15ish years, would probably be making $400k.

I am thinking for me, it's worth it because that's the norm in the company and everyone in jobs I want has it. But what does /biz/ think? I am also interested in hearing your thoughts for the degree in the broader economy.

Thanks bros

in my humble opinion, i say, it is good to learn anything / study anything if you actually use the knowledge learned. I would only do any course if if you eventually can apply the skills and information you have learned there. Is this the case for you?

In my opinion here yes. Classes never apply 100% to the real world I don't think. But I'm weak in areas like accounting, managerial finance, executive decision making. I do feel these courses would be more than just on paper but would be useful.

You can learn all of those things yourself. People don’t pay $150k for an elite MBA to learn accounting. They pay that for prestige and connections

My bosses boss manages about 3k people in total, does not have an "elite" education, just a boring MBA, and makes $350k/yr more or less. His boss is similarly educated and clear $500k/yr. Both of them would have dozens of others at their level in the company.

>>53176937
I figure paying a total of $15k to have the degree on paper and gain education in those areas isn't a bad deal. That's 15% of my gross for one year. The price doesn't intimidate me.

I will say I'm not gonna pay $200k+ and go rub shoulders with coasties and trannies lols

That's kinda what I thought. For me, it hardly matters if it's actually got value, it seems to be the culture here.
I think for the cost it's got to be worth it. $15k is nothing. Even if I left the company, I imagine it would have some contribution.

Sounds like it's worth it for you. If you have nearby schools, you could also do an executive MBA which is designed for people who work while also letting you network in person. People have been critical of MBA's in recent years because it turns out that you can't get a bad MBA online with zero job-experience and get a job at Goldman-Sachs. But people hiring and promoting do like to see that you have an MBA. Just remember to shop around and make sure you don't get ripped off. I'd rather get one for 10 grand from WGU than for 100 grand from the big state university.

I got an MBA from a reputable University and it didn’t do Jack shit for my career. Once I learned to program databases everyone and their mom started beating my door down to touch my pee pee and offer me a job. Modern education is a fucking joke.

>> No.53180279

>>53176548
The purpose of the MBA isn't to get you a wagie position, it's not much good for that.

it's supposed to teach you how to earn the top spot or create it for yourself.

it's the skills that matter, not the sheepskin.

you can learn those same skills managing an Arby's for 5 years 2bhonest, but the MBA is perhaps a bit easier to do. Either way, nobody cares if you have an MBA or ran a fast food joint for a few years. What matters is what you learned and how you use that knowledge.

>> No.53180398

That simply isn't true. In the corporate environment and especially with roastie HR official stuff like diplomas and certificates do matter. It's stupid but it's true.
>>53176548

Generally, taking any masters level course at the uni at your age should have a very clear benefit to it. From what you have written it makes sense to do it as it opens up opportunities for promotion and more money.

Anon, look around. Do you see much meritocracy? Having a job is more important than doing the job. You can be the best person at your job in the entire country and there will be little reward. Meanwhile, if you hold a nice job for a few years, you'll be able to get an even better job because of "experience."
