Then when the news drops, crash the economy to drown it out, and let the overall market push it down further. Market cap is last share sale price * number of shares. If I sell a share of GM for 3 trillion dollars, and there are no sales between you refreshing the page, it will show their market cap in the trillions of trillions of dollars.

This is because market cap is a measure for judging macro economic decisions.

If GME dropped to 0.05 cents USD, it would certainly be delisted from major exchanges. This does not effect short positions that may or may not have been opened, and may or may not be on the books.

What happens when there is no liquidity and someone is legally obligated to purchase that item? they offer a higher price until it can be satisfied. What if nobody offers? They still need to meet their obligation regardless.
