It is a cryptocurrency. It just doesn't use the same type of blockchain as the original Bitcoin white paper. But neither does ETH anymore. And most new cryptos that are coming out are going to be proof of stake. XRP has the end of advantage that the nodes are not looking for. Proof of anything for profit. Nodes are just decentralized validators.

BTC is the horse and buggy. Yes, anybody could make a buggy, and many people could raise a horse to pull it. It's true that it takes a pretty centralized and specific skill set to create a car, but like a horse and buggy, BTC is slow and the fuel that it takes to go 100 Miles is a fucking fed and well rested horse. By that analogy XRP is a flying car.
