You sell the calendar year at a loss to offset the taxes you would pay on gains.

its not that great for us poorfucks because we gamble with microcaps. ie
>invest 5k into x token
>goes down 90%
>$500 or whatever
>sell before the new year (4.5k tax deductible loss)
>x token moons 100x, now worth 500k or whatever
>495k liable for taxation
>saved myself 4.5k, great.

How are you liable for gains on something that only went up after you sold anon

>> No.53055421

Tax loss harvesting is a scam to get you to report your holdings. Don’t pay your taxes. They will use the money on Ukraine and social media propaganda. Fuck the IRS. Fuck the FED. OCCUPY WALLSTREET.

Wash sale rules dont apply to crypto in the USA currently. I'm sure it will after the round of regulation that's coming next year though

>> No.53055589

>>53055486
It’s debatable since it’s not substantially the same. I.e tqqq is a bunch of futures contracts based on the nasdaq, qqq are the actual consituiants and they do not move the same percentage wise. There’s a good discussion on bogleheads about it.

But yeah fuck em, as long as my broker doesn’t count it as a wash sale the reporting shouldn’t be fucked.

It's the end of 2022. Keklord has had profitable trades for the year and owes $XXX in taxes. To offset what he has to pay in these taxes, if he is a smart chad he sells other assets of his that will result in a loss for the year, this means he bought them for say $5 but sold them for $2.5. Ideally, the loss from the $5 to $2.5 trade completely offsets the $XXX amount he owes for his profits, resulting in keklord paying $0 for taxes. Best part is that he simply buys back the asset he sold for $2.5, only downside being that he has to hold for longer than a year otherwise get hit for %40+ capital gains when it is time to dump on that.
