There's also a massive tech sector in Georgia but enjoy living in Africa (I got lucky since I was a consultant and lived in a different state and this was 2010 so I didn't have to live there). Considering the cost of living in a blue state is double most red states, only making 20% more means a 30% loss, overgeneralizing. Also, are we talking about the federal poverty line, or poverty in general? A Californian can make 80k and barely make rent in a shithole like West Covina, but 28k minimum wage would still get you a nice apartment across from amenities and the university in Houston... or own your own mobile home in literally any state + better health care and the same WIC/EBT that buys more for your dollar.
