It's mostly Treasury bonds owed to Americans. The remaining majority is owed to Japan, China and Western Europeans.

The FED doesn't buy Treasuries directly from the US Treasury, it's illegal. The US Treasury will issue bonds, commercial banks (or non-bank financial institutions) will buy those bonds (remember, commercial banks are the major reason for inflation, they're the ones that create the credit in the first place) and then the FED will buy those bonds from the banks, or non-bank financial institutions. Depending on who they buy those bonds from makes a huge difference over how M2 is effected.

The way USD works is we issue debt in the form of treasury bonds and that debt is purchased and held by other countries. In return for holding that debt, we pay them a percentage of the value on a regular basis in accordance with the terms of the bond and what length it is. It's debt that by design is never really meant to be "paid off", at best another country could sell the bonds and get back the value of them and if enough countries did that then you could run into some weird scenarios because that happening would basically mean there's no faith left in the US or the dollar but even still on a functional level it would just be the erasure of those "debts" that were never actually real to begin with.

But yeah it's an attention getter to just go "BUT DA TRILLIYONS IN DENBTS!" and listen to cattle screech about it and act as if they understand it.
