It's pretty obvious cope from the "self taught" devs. Nothing prevents you from leaning on your own AND getting a degree. And in fact most people with degrees probably also have some hobbyist background in the thing they're studying also. It's not mutually exclusive. Anyone who actually has a degree knows most of the work is done on your own anyway, it's not like the professor is doing all the work for you so the whole concept is pretty obviously retarded from the get go.

I blame 3 things:
1. Unrealistic expectations. HR demanding 1st class degrees and 10 years experience in everything for a basic entry-level job. I know one company recently got over 150 relevant applicants, yet HR rejected them all for frivolous reasons.
2. Universities not teaching the right stuff businesses want.
3. Businesses not training. Why rely on universities to do the work, why not train the staff yourself? Especially if you are using more obscure software and languages.

I'm making friends with soldiers down at the local firing range with a view to getting my own gear held for me there longer term but now just plinking away with the tourist level rifles, pistols and shotguns. I get grass fed beef and wild salmon shipped in every week, and I've got all the supplements and electrolytes I could ever need also, I have enough tech gear to start my own local cloud provider and exotic stuff for dabbling in gpgpu with a focus in pytorch and ai stuff. I'm rigged with so much automation there is basically no need for me to do anything here, and even if there was local help runs five bucks a day for whatever.
Eventually I'll probably set up another similar compound seaside and buy a liveaboard blue water cruiser and dock it there, then a third compound in rural seaside Japan and maybe some other seaside areas I've been and enjoyed during my world roaming adventures. In the distant future I'm going to try build my own liveaboard submarine with hydrogen lifepo4 and otec drive.
I welcome anybody to whom the above appeals to in any way. The world could do with more of us, and I've no complaints about the way I've been treated here.

Fellow burnt out software engineers, SEA expats, mentally ill technologists, and others seeking shelter, I have a question:

I do SRE to fund my lifestyle and pay the bills, but have sort of hit a net worth where I don't have to moneymaxx nearly as much. I'm also about 70% done with moving to the Philippines (got some loose ends in the US).

I'm good enough at chilling in a corporation since 2015 and getting paid, but want to up my competency. I cheated in college, which influenced my skillset for sure, but it's not all doom and gloom because I skipped out on the hardcore implement an RDBMS in pure C projects

What's some cool tech to learn that would either be useful for CHILL employment or my own projects?

Explicitly very not interested in systems programming, mildy not interested in game development. My only recent personal project idea has been a philippines dating site lol

My overall theme here is that I feel SWE would be more sustainable and less frustrating if I enjoyed the area of tech I was working with/on

I'm in the same position, between going all in on web dev or cloud. Web dev is easier to break into, probably more threatened by advances in ai than IT. I.T. is harder to break into especially if you're trying to get in via AWS/CompTIA/CISCO certs. But if you get into security, it is unlikely that you would face replacement by automation in the same time frame as web devs.

Depends on what kind of lifestyle you want really. Either way you have to deal with the culture of tech. I'm sure being in i.t. security is less pozzed than web dev, but the goal for me is remote work so I could stomach the webdev community culture if it means I can have a decent salary and not have to go to an office.

I thought to do webdev you have to know and work with cloud tech since it makes it easy to use from home and make the products salable.
I didn't do the usual cert route because those things expire whereas uni meme papers never really I'm being interviewed for an IT role. To be honest just maintaining and making scripts to automate things seems comfy compared to coding everyday.
The amount of rejections for software dev jobs has made me insecure about my coding in general. I guess IT Is just fine for me, I'll just code my own things on the side.

Very few people will go out past age 30 or 40 and learn a real physical trade. I think they'll just start killing us off faster desu.

But you are answering your own question. If you like the nature of IT better, then do it. There is no reason not to pursue AWS certs though, and if you want to specialize then being able to pass the big dick security certs will greatly expand your potential employmet.

A front end web dev doesn't have to work with databases necessarily. Full stack is where the money is. Can being a dev help me escape leafland and return to the European countries my ancestors are from? I hear that, as bad as things are in Europe, the general vibe of people even in the most pozzed city is still more civil, friendly and human. I'm tired of living with people who are simultaneously smug libshits as well as tasteless, aggressive white trash. I hear even in shitholes like downtown London, the streets are cleaner and the people lack that "open air insane asylum vibe" that you get in all the cities in Canada. If I'm going to live in a word of insane NPCs, I'd at least like to live where the NPCs occasionally stop to appreciate the beauty of nature while walking to their bullshit job, or return a friendly smile, or just aren't so grubby and trashy all the time.
